Red state freak kills daughter for losing virginity
Cops: Mom Killed Girl for Losing Virginity

Friday, January 14, 2005

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A mother forced her 12-year-old daughter to drink bleach for having sex and sat on her until the child died, a police detective said, adding that a 9-year-old brother was forced to watch the attack.

Detective Warren Cotton's testimony came Thursday in a preliminary hearing for Tunisia Archie (search), 31, of the Wylam neighborhood, who is charged with capital murder in the asphyxiation death of Jasmine Archie (search). If convicted, she could be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole.

District Judge Sheldon Watkins sent the case to a grand jury for review.

Cotton said Archie, who is being held in jail without bond, gave several statements about what happened on Nov. 26.

2. Drink bleach?!!....This woman is ill (I hope)
What a horrible fate. I hope they keep her under wraps until they take a good look at her reasoning.

If she is just dead dog mean....I may have to rethink death sentencing

10. 12 year old killed
Not to start a war right off the bat (new member here) but it just doesn't occur to me to see this awful story and automatically think in terms of red/blue states. It's a terribly sick and sad story but I don't see where this red-state bashing comes in. There are a lot of reasons to disagree with conservatives, but just because a mom kills her daughter does not automatically mean this lady is a die-hard Bush/Rove lover. Maybe she didn't even vote at all. I pray for that little girl.

14. It's an obvious disregard for rationality, understanding, education and
being kind to children, which makes her kind of a by-default member of the Religious Right, particularly if this WAS religiously motivated.

But, in the Religious Right's defense, I do believe that even though they are nuts, most of them wouldn't kill their children. They'd just maybe beat them or shame them or lie to them or psychologically twist their brains into self-hating, repressive mush.

Of course, there are the "projectors," too, which is a problem with the right-wingers. If the mother perceived her daughter's "moral failure" as an extention of her own powerlessness and self-hatred for her own moral failures, "perversions" or temptations, that could lead her to transfer her inner torment to her child. It would work much the same way that latent homosexuality and homophobia work (which, that is NOT just an old saying -- there is a psychological link -- "projection," -- however, not ALL gay bashers are really gay, just a certain percentage).

At any rate, it's disturbing, and, permit me a "slippery slope" here, but is Biblical hate rhetoric taken to its fullest extreme, and since it is obviously under the delusion that losing one's virginity has a moral, narrative component, which is mostly the product of Christianity.

That said, I wouldn't be happy if my 12-year-old girl were having sex, but I wouldn't kill her.

16. Thank you for your logic and reasoning
I would have simply felt disgust at the "mother" (that word should be reserved for a female parent who gives a damn) and pity for the life that was cut short.
I don't think I would have said, "Yeah, those red staters kill their children over the strangest things" had I not seen it on this forum.

Honestly, people, this has nothing to do with voting patterns. It has to do with a sickness in the mind.

20. You must be new here.
Ever since the election, one of the most popular pastimes on this board has been to point to examples of criminality and/or stupidity that happened in a state where a majority voted for Bush and then engage in wildass, unfounded speculation attributing them to everyone who happens to live in that state.

Sure, it's dumb, and bigoted besides (imagine the furor that would result if people made the same sort of generalizations based on this woman's race), but this form of bigotry is acceptable among many liberals and some people here seem to find it enjoyable, particularly when a grisly death is involved. For these ghouls, a dead soldier or a dead child is just more grist for the "red state/blue state" mill.

24. I Live In A Red State And Live Among People Who Have Become
Zealots for Christ.

While this woman may truly be only insane, the actions described reflect the "Zombie Like" behavior displayed by many that have fallen under the fundamentalist spell.

It is true that none of us know this for sure. However, it is a logical connection to make.

5. This is what happens when you teach Abstinence!
The policies of the Bush Cabal make this sort of even more and more likely.

Just like back alley abortions.

7. Just how far are you willing to stretch a story to bash Christians?
This woman is insane, period. I've known people who are whacked who are Christians and who aren't. Mental illness is an equal opportunity problem.

At no place in this article does it say she did it because of her religion.

I live in a red state, I am a Christian, I am a democrat!!!!!!!!

9. She was a VERY sick person.
From the article:

"Jasmine's brother, Jacorey, 9, was made to stand in a corner and watch the entire attack. Archie "told him that if he shed a tear that she was going to kill him, too," Cotton testified"

While I can't conceive of such actions coming from a sane mind, I know there are those who disagree with me.

12. Perhaps her crazy reaction was triggered by her own early pregnancy
which drove her to poverty and further mental problems.

I have a feeling that if society produced decent jobs with better wages and better health care, things like this would happen much less often.

However, if people want to turn this into a Red v Blue/ Christian v Atheiism thing, have at it. But those people who would see it through that lens are just compounding the problem.

19. Everyone has a different threshold of mental tolerance
There's also the unknown underlying issues in her life. Not to mention that there may have been a predisposition to this type of behavior.

It's not a Red/Blue or Christian/Atheism issue. It's a mental health issue.

Did she show signs before and not receive help? The odds are she did. While sometimes a person will break suddenly, the truth is it's usually gradual and there are signs of it's onset.

What this should have us focusing on is how to better prevent something so excruciatingly wrong from occurring again in the future.

No one should have had to die the way that little girl did.

21. Yes, Kerry took Birimngham by a substantial majority.
I guess that would lead a freeper to speculate that this woman acted as she did because she's in a place that votes Democratic.

And that would be no different from what is happening here.

15. I wish someone would show me in the article that the killer is a "fundie"
People keep spewed anti-Christian epithets when nowhere does any article on the murder mention the mother's religion. The mother is only described as depressed and possibly mentally-ill, not a religious or political conservative.

18. As a matter of perspective...
no one has mentioned that this is a pretty common occurance in Islamic cultures also.

This was a horrible act. But trying to make the act of one individual a statement on a group, even if that group is our opponent (enemy?) is not right.
