Help me think of a response to this....
ok, I was in class the other day and I got into an argument with this one girl....I said that Jesus was a liberal and then talked about how he gave to the poor and helped the weakest in society and etc.... and then she came back with "Yeah but he didn't take it from the rich and people who worked for their money"
Help me think of a comeback!

2. Scripture
"And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a RICH man to enter into the kingdom of God." (Matt. 19:24)

"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you.
"Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten.
"Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. (James 5:1-3)

3. Well, there's that whole camel passing through the eye of a needle thing
And I seem to recall him saying something about if a man wanted to follow him then he should sell all his possesions and give the money to the poor. I could be wrong though, it's been a while since I've had any religion.

5. Simply inform her of what Jesus said regarding taxes, when the rabbis
asked him if they should pay taxes to Ceasar "Render unto Ceasar that which is Ceasars and unto God that which is Gods."

It doesn't get much simpler than that.

7. No dear, he did not take from the rich and the people who
worked for their money. He had no political ties with which to do that. May I surmise then, that you donate your hard earned money to help feed the poor, clothe the naked, tend the sick and visit those in prison? What do you do to help those less fortunate?

and Mammon. (wealth,money)

but at the same time, i don't recall the J man advocating changing another. I believe that was Paul's advice.

so you should not have to come back with a rejoinder. More important would be to change oneself.

"The eye is the lamp of the body; so then if your eye is
clear, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is
bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the
light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! "

$$ is such a petty tyrant.

11. he threw the rich out of the temple
along with their tables, their money, their animals for sale, and their notiions of turning religion into commerce.

He said, "Give all that you have to the poor and follow me."

He also said "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven."

If you want to call yourself a Christian, you have to divest yourself of wealth and give it all to the poor. It is not optional.

12. He told people to give up their posessions and follow him if they
wanted to join up. I'm not good at scriptural references, but I know I've read that. Jesus was definitely NOT into materialism.

a Bush hater, and seriously starting an discussion with Jesus was a liberal ... Jesus is Jesus. Politic and religion should never mix.

Looking at her response...

Yeah but he didnt take it from the rich ..... This I can understand
and people who worked for their money ...... OK this I am totally lost. Did you get her response right?

15. Jesus would support economic redistribution.
Jesus taught love. He said to love your neighbor as yourself. If your neighbor is in need, you help him/her. You share your wealth. Jesus was liberal because he would support economic redistribution.

For example, Bush has never earned an honest dollar in his life.

17. The merchants at the Temple
were people who allegedly "worked" for their living. He cast them out of the house of God for selling stuff there, and he was really angry that anyone would do it!
Also, he called on everyone to renounce their posession and follow Him. Posessions include money. and that should be pretty obvious. Jesus said (and this is my favorite all-time quote): "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven"
And thus does my sig line change yet again.

18. I'd ask her about Mark 8:35-37 RSV in the Bible
"For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life?"

Then lap her over the head with:

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal." (Matthew 6:19-20 RSV)

robs from the rich and gives to the poor. Bush robs from the poor to give to the rich. What does the Bible say about theft?

25. If a man asks for your shirt, give him your robe also....
paraphrasing Jesus... But Jesus was only speaking about the right path for Christians to take - he was not attempting to explain the path of Pharisees and hypocrites. No one should have to "take" money from the rich, they should see the donkey that is stuck in the ditch, and mo matter if it is the Sabbath, should pull the ass from the ditch.

(gave their money to the poor) in order to save their own souls.
