Bill Maher on Iowa: "The democrats got it right"
Edited on Tue Jan-20-04 06:04 PM by DaisyUCSB
Paraphrasing

"With Clark, Kerry, and Edwards, the democrats have who they should have as frontrunners, because they owe that too the voters." They owe them people who can compete with Bush, someone who can compete in the red states"

"There is a reason General Clark was first in his class at West Point, he's a fast learner, and he's getting better every day at campaigning, something he hasn't been involved with for a long time"

"John Kerry had a guy at an event WHO'S LIFE HE SAVED. That's gonna be pretty hard if not impossible to compete with. What's George Bush gonna say. I was at college and a guy I know passed out and I saved him from drowning in his own vomit."

I don't know if Wolf Blitzer posts transcripts or not, but if he does, I or someone else should post it when it becomes available.

11. Bill Maher
Bill Maher represents the only "forum show" on TV that isn't a Republican shill.

Bill can be a bit smug and arrogant at times, but overall he provides a unique voice with his HBO show "Real Time".

3. He's right. We must continue to get it right.
There is too much at stake with the neocons holding the reins of power. Ousting the criminal cabal is the first step in rebuilding this country.

15. In 2000 he voted for Nader
He claims to be a libertarian, but only on the drug issues. More than anything, he enjoys the sounds of his own mind. Pay him no mind.

5. Wolfie reminded Maher that they are BOTH working for the media kingdom
of aoltimewarnercnn etc which owns Maher's show HBO.

Mediawhores all.

No biggie. They do NOT want Dean anywhere near the White House because it would threaten their media pimpire.

He seems to like Clark, Kerry and Edwards and that is a good thing. He can open his mouth and release some pretty nasty stuff sometimes. I'm glad he likes them. "It's a good thing."

17. Obviously if it's one of them he would
He gives alot of wieght to a candidate being a veteran, so much so that he voted for Bob Dole even though his politics weren't that aligned with him

Also, he seems to really connect with Edwards taxing wealth over work argument. Maher has been a big proponent of the estate tax and corporate policing for a long time, something near and dear to Edwards platform.

16. For anyone who missed it, he also said that Dean looked like...
..he was on crystal meth last night. He was extremely negative about Dean overall. I don't really take much Maher says seriously, but its just another example of the kind of buzz that speech is getting. People, not in the Dean campaign, are completely negative about it. I really don't see how he can recover from this. It looks like Kerry or Clark to me. Edwards is too inexperienced. I think its over for Dean.

18. Mr. Maher Is Correct Here
The result in Iowa was the best possible for the Deomcratic Party, and its prospects for victory in the fall. It gives reason to believe the rank and file of the Party means to defeat the criminals of the '00 Coup, and is making that the principal criterion for deciding who the candidate will be. That is the right thing to do.

21. certainly different times now.
In 2000 you had an encumbent VP going against the son of a former president. A third party candidate looked promising to a lot of people if only to open up politics a little bit. Democrats were riding a high being "winners" in the presidency the last 2 elections...we were playing it fast and loose.

This year it totally different, we see what our idealism can get us at this precise moment and some of us would instead go with realism to get what I perceive to be the worst president in history out of office.

Im still idealistic, but I can certainly see that four more years of a president who cares nothing for the american people may be the worst thing that can happen. Especially since he'll not have to worry about re-election.

Saying his gaffes were overblown, and Dean was right? I guess he goes with the flow.

26. possibly,
I know Maher is very apt at staying on target, so maybe he was sticking up for his gaffes. I didn't hear him. It's very well likely though that he would stick up for the gaffes he made, or say they were true, and yet still believe that Dean isn't the best person for the job.

he's more of a libertarian. But I think many libertarians are abandoning the Bushies.

go right down the list, he would basically be a mainstream democrat if it wasn't for the drug war

31. Once again...
Who cares? Why does each and every idiotic comment from every single irrational ego-maniacal television "celebrity" and self-appointed pundit get it's own thread?? We have truly become our own worst enemy. We are the lapdogs for the sycophantic media that until two weeks ago we collectively abhorred.

I really think the vast majority of people here at DU have lost all perspective. I highly recommend you all read David Zephyr's amazing soliloquy:
