Need help for blog entry: Caring for the poor
I need both the conservative arguments against using the government to care for the poor, and the progressive arguments for it.

Thanks!

1. Maybe this will help
It is a public imperative to help the poor with government aid. The greatest souce of all manner of public evil is poverty. Thus, elimination of poverty is the surest way for government to provide for public health, safety and welfare as mandated by the constitution.

2. Against:
Taking money from one person to give another by force is wrong, charitable donations by a person to another is not (and as members of society we agree to pay tax for things which benefit the society as a whole by pooling resources to build roads, provide defense, et al).

Lastly, taxing to help others, if done, should be at the local level - the community people helping those in their area, yada yada yada.

For: Religion (some would argue) which says we need to help out others, or personal belief system that says you should help out others for moral reasons.

Ok, a little joke in all that - but moral reasons aside the way this can help the group is by recognizing that all citizens have great potential and that by assisting them in this life when they need it we are indeed helping the group. It won't always be the case (just like we have corrupt contractors who skim money and deliver poor goods) as some will use the system and give nothing back, but the many will use the system to launch themselves into a better position in their life and able to contribute more to the tax base and to others.

4. We must realize
that the welfare system is not static but that people are constantly moving in and out of it. The ones who use it will eventually be contributing to it. The ones who are rich and think they will never have to use it are in a delusional state. The top 1% are only there now. Their families are there now but where have their families come from. If they have always been wealthy then they are in denial. The only thing we as humans can be sure of is constant CHANGE. Who of those that are on welfare will be the ones , who in the future, will help humanity in profound ways?

5. The goal should be
to eliminate poverty, not support it.

Simply "caring for the poor" is not enough.

Care must be coupled with education and employment (and I'm not talking about "minimum wage employment"). There must be hope for the future or all the care in the world is wasted!

No one is more dangerous than one that is without hope!

6. True enough. A world without poverty would be a beautiful thing

granted, some folks will say it can't be done, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
