According to a Bachelor's thesis, there have been 25 different rationales for the iraq war, and 23 that can be attributed directly to the administration. The list is here: http://watchingthewatchers.org/index.php?p=262~A!

I was getting a lot of emails asking me to dig it up, so I did. Thankfully someone else had done the hard research ahead of me, and I only had to glean it. The thesis itself is fantastic.

The backstory is that if OPEC or any big oil producer moves away from the dollar (to the euro, say) it will damage the dollar's role as a reserve currency.
Saddam was (or was about to) trade oil in euros. Plus, with Iraq - and it's world's-second-largest oil reserves - under the contol of a US puppet, we have a big seat at the OPEC table.
