ESPN just showed a clip of Dean's speech... |
|
6pm Sportscenter led off its "10 worst podium moments"
...with a clip from Dean's Iowa speech.
Did anybody else see that?

5. Warning: do NOT watch Letterman, The Daily Show or Sat Night Live |
|
if you don't want to hear more. I hate to say but it's just going to get worse.... They will be watching Dean with "bated breath" for another slip-up...

7. It's the media's fault. |
|
Dean didn't actually rave on national television and scream YEEEEEAAAAAAAGGGHHH!!! No, it's the media's fault.
Historical note: When they are hunting you, don't volunteer to put your face in the sniper scope. See Bill Clinton for reference. They were hunting him, and he threw himself under the bus via Monica. Res ipsa loquitor.

If they've got the knives out for you already, you don't hand them an AK-47.

10. or don't tell the press to follow you... |
|
then book a boat excursion with a woman other than your wife.
Dean HAD to know this speech would receive wide coverage. He managed to appeal only to people who already support him (and not even all of them!) while alienating everybody else.
This isn't the media's fault - within minutes of it being shown live, a lot of people here already knew this would be big, without the benefit of the media telling us that.
It's Dean's "Dukakis in a tank" moment.

12. Doggone that media, forcing Dean into a Primal Scream on National TV. |
|
By the way, down here in Tennessee, my Republican friends, who are not all that unreasonable (really!) think a Kerry/Edwards ticket may well unseat Bush.

14. he was playing to the back row of a large crowd |
|
unfortunately the cameras were in the front row.
I'm starting to like his speech. Like Bill Maher said today on Wolf Blitzer, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you show too much enthusiasm, your'e a freak. If you don't show enough enthusaism, you're wooden and emotionless.
Dean's only sin was to be the front runner who got beat.

I saw TDS last night where they aired one of Dean's more, erm, ballistic moments. They compared him to Smeagol/Gollum. And I might have been bummed, if it weren't for the look of genuine joy that ran across Stewart's face.
Sides, I haven't watched SNL in 10 years and don't plan to anytime soon.

The speech itself (GASP) or the fact that ESPN played it.

and I hope others feel the same.
The fact is, he WAS trying to have fun, he WAS trying to be positive in the face of a stunning third place finish.
I thought it showed a charmingly human side of the guy. Especially the YeeeeeHAW! yell.
I like it.

Well that's interesting. Getting on ESPN is a coup and its a memorable bit that many folks might find a kick. Maybe his scream will actually work to Dean's benefit.
