Lot's of confusion on the vote...
Do committee votes to send the matter to the floor count as a vote to disconfirm or confirm the nominee as well or do committee members also register their vote on the floor?

It seems that many on this board are assuming the vote was made. Others are saying it isn't until tomorrow. I thought the latter was the case. Now I'm confused. Anyone have a definite answer to this?

1. It will go the the floor. It has been voted out of committee -- with only
two Democratic senators standing up for what is right -- Kerry and Boxer.

3. Does voting it out of committee mean
that the others support her nomination? I thought it was just that no one had anything else to say. Must a vote yes here be a vote yes on the floor. Still confused.

7. Usually, those who vote yea in Committee support the nominee.
Those who vote nay, are opposed. Sometimes a senator will vote yea just to get a nomination out of committee and onto the floor to allow all senators a chance to vote, but this is unusual. And in such circumstances, the senator doing so usually makes it clear that is what he or she is doing.

Once the nomination comes up on the floor, any senator can change his or her vote, but this the rare exception, not the rule.

2. The nomination should now go to the full Senate
Procedural vote, but should expect some more to vote no.

4. I think the Dems who voted "yes" can say...
... that they only voted to give the full Senate a chance to vote.

Let's see how the committee Dems vote in the full Senate tally. Hopefully some of them will vote "no" at that time.

That said, with repukes in the majority both on the commiteee and in the full senate, the nomination's moving through anyway.

EVERY Democrat should feel free to vote "no" for the symbolic value. Rice is the National Security Advisor who missed 9-11. She has no business getting a promotion now.

Do the Senators on the hearing committee get another vote (edit) with the full Senate?

I've been all over Google trying to find this stuff out, and not getting much 411.

Thanks!

before the committee, the Democrats who voted for Rice are going to vote for her again on the floor. They gave no indication to the contrary, but we can hope.

We may pick up a few votes against Rice on the floor from senators who are not members of the committee; but I can't think off hand who will cast them.

A sorry performance by most; but three cheers for Boxer and Kerry.

12. Letters to the Dems on the committee need to be written in mass.
CNN is saying the committee voted to confirm. What gives?

13. Technically, I think the committee only voted to...
... put the thing in the hands of the full Senate.

But, yeah, I agree. There's no reason at all for Democrats to vote "yes" even just to do that.

Symbolism matters, especially when we're the minority party in such dire straits. Sometimes, symbolism is all we've got. :grr:

15. I'll be very pleasantly surprised if Biden, Obama and the rest of
the weak-kneed Democrats on the committee change their votes when Rice's confirmation is brought up on the floor of the Senate. I'm not holding my breath, however.

Same here. Pleasant surprises welcome...
... but from what I've heard, not expected.

9. Senators on Committee vote on the floor also
the committee vote decides whether it will go to the full Senate floor.

Senators can vote different on the floor if they want.

16. I should feel vindicated by that, but seeing as how it's local news,
I don't at all!

The only thing worse than the payola press is the LOCAL payola press.
