What was the exact quote from Rice about the tsunami?
Edited on Wed Jan-19-05 02:45 PM by Momgonepostal
I heard a snippet of it on the news. Something about the tsunami being a great opportunity for the American people. Does anyone her have her exact words?

1. "It has paid great dividends for us!"
"I do agree that the tsunami was a wonderful opportunity to show not just the US government, but the heart of the American people, and I think it has paid great dividends for us," she said.

Boxer, a sharp critic of Rice's work as national security adviser, quickly took the nominee to task over the characterization of the tsunami as a "wonderful opportunity."

"The tsunami was one of the worst tragedies of our lifetime," Boxer said. "And it's going to have a 10-year impact on rebuilding that area. I was very disappointed in your statement. I think you blew the opportunity."

3. Thank you, Bluebear!
How like the Bush administration to think of death and destruction in terms of "dividends."

I like Barbara Boxer more and more every year.

6. What great opportunity?
I heard that and about fell over. I couldn't believe my ears...

Damn, do these people live in such a bubble that a terrible disaster is a great opportunity?

I didn't hear Boxer's response, though...You go girl... I'm glad someone called her on it. How discussing...

8. a chance to show how generous we are?
You know like, "I'm sorry all you tens of thousands of people died, but hey, at least America has the chance now to show how giving we all can be. That should really pay off because now when the world calls us stingy bastards or war mongering pigs, we can point to the tsunami relief efforts as an example of how great we are." :puke:

9. I read the Yahoo account, and a transcript in the NY Times,
link below,

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/18/politics/18TEXT-RICE.html?pagewanted=print&position=

and I cannot find the quote in this transcript. There is a quote from Barbara Boxer calling Rice on this, but not Rice's remark. This bothers me and I wonder if anybody knows where another copy of a transcript could be found.

I could not google any copy other than the NYTimes.
Thanks.

10. Cannot find any other transcript...
...and you're right...the omission from the NY Times 'transcript' is troubling.

Found this, though:

12. Glad someone else sees what I'm saying . .
I read that Yahoo account earlier, but what bothers me is that this NY Times transcript is incomplete but being passed off as the real thing. I noticed that the Times got this from some company--can't remember now who it was--and since this comment has become so controversial, I wonder now if it was intentionally purged.

13. I wonder if it will show up in the Congressional Record transcripts...
...before the week is out. That'll be the telling point.

11. Actually the 911 attack has also provided great dividends to Bush.
Did she mention how "lucky" they were that they failed to prevent those attacks. That moron steps in shit and finds gold in it for him.
