...even if most of the Senate Dems stood up, all they'd need is a few weasels like Zell and they'd have it. I think Biden just wants to let everyone know he is disgusted but is voting thumbs up just to keep the lines of communications with the Evil Empire open. But I guess you'd have to ask him to get his real sense of how he feels. I can't speak for him with any authority.

The Senate has a firm sense of their duty, but at the same time, they are all a CLUB OF ONE HUNDRED. They all look at each other as potential rivals for the PRESIDENCY, and they have this odd attitude when it comes to privilege and authority. They draw a wider line when it comes to Cabinet appointments, because they don't last forever. Judges are a little different.

They don't necessarily vote how they feel. Sometimes if a vote result will be overwhelmingly one way, they vote that way to preserve their base that feels that way. Sometimes if a vote result will be overwhelmingly one way, they vote the other to prove a point ("see, I risked voting the other way, don't you approve"). Politicians don't always vote what they truly wish would happen because it's all a game (with serious consquences of course), but can be part of a bigger thing. Politics. bah

She was going to be confirmed no matter what any Dem voted. It was a great opportunity for Dems to publicly bring to light the failings of the Bush administration and the distorted half truths given to Congress and the American people to get them in this damned mess of a war. I thought it all went really well. Boxer, Biden, and Kerry were contentious enough with enough soundbites that could be carried by the MSM.
