33. It's a meaningless vote at a meaningless time -- PR move to save face |
|
with the grassroots to build political capital.
When it counted, he wasn't there.
It didn't cost him anything to cast that vote. The payoff is all upside for his image.
And that's why he did it, IMO. I predicted he would do this after Jan. 6. It makes cold political sense because he knows how pissed-off voters have been at him and this is a way to win some back (remember 2008!).
It was a good political move.

Your right it doesn't cost him anything to cast a vote. He is paid to do cast them. HMMM Don't you wish you could be instead of being a armchair quaterback that is all talk. Glad to see you think his vote was meaningless. I guess you think the neocon bitch deserves to be SOS. The only thing political about what you said is your repuke talking points. So speak for yourself because you sure as hell don't speak for the majority. http://209.150.59.148:8080/dontphoto/young/image/image13.jpgKERRY! KERRY! KERRY! KERRY!

He's voting the way he probably would have voted regardless of the bitching and moaning on DU. He's going to continue to vote whatever way he wants to. Too little, too late? I guess he's not supposed to do his job.

36. I wish he would give up his Senate seat. This has nothing to do with his |

vote re: Rice. It has to do with his shoddy performance during his campaign and his failure to adequately distinguish himself from Bush on the most critical issues.

His seat is safe in Massachusetts. Always will be as long as he wants it. If he never runs for President again, it will be all of our loss, not his. As for me, I do live in Mass and he will be there (not unlike Byrd is in WV) until they call the final code blue on his cold dead body.

If the complainers are from Massachusetts they are free to run against him.
If they're not from Massachusetts they have no say in the matter.
I am from Massachusetts. My vote says he stays where he is - for now.

and I expected him to vote "nay". Unfortunately his personality is not one that connects with the average "Joe". Ohio should have been a landslide for Kerry as well as Iowa, Nevada, and New Mexico. It is as much our fault as his and it is certainly time to stop crying over Ohio......it is over, over, over, over, over and we look like sore losers and pitiful wimps. It may be that Bush stole Ohio but it is history and the only thing we can do at this point is to make sure it never happens again. We certainly did not learn last time. We all know GW was never elected in 2000 and he took office and became possibly the worse president in our history and the Republicans still out maneuvered us. We couldn't "bring home the bacon" even though the general public was starving. We need election reform that focuses on making it as easy for poor people to vote as the middle class and wealthy....only then will we have truly democratic voting. We should be pressuring all of Reps and Senators for such legislation. In politics "what goes around, comes around" and it is time for the "coming around" to begin and I can't think of a better place than Pennsylvania. Our energies now should be focused on removing this hateful man from the United States Senate.

He used his question time for speeches, not entirely coherent ones at that. Boxer did her job, as did Dodd. I'm very disappointed with Kerry. I believe he does most everything for his own political advantage. If Boxer hadn't been voting no, I don't think Kerry would have. I'm glad for his vote and it improves my view of him a bit, but certainly not enough to support him for the Democratic nomination in 2008.

44. memo to Kerry bashers: |
|
You say he did it for political reasons. Guess what, that's what we elect politicians to do--represent us. How are Dean or Clark representing us? What election legislation have they proposed or even mentioned? Do either of them have a campaign going to remove Rumsfeld? Have either of them been to Iraq lately? Ever?
You say he's laying the groundwork for a '08 rerun. And Dean and Clark AREN'T? They're doing nothing else!
Folks, DEAN AND CLARK DON'T HAVE REAL JOBS! THEY ARE FULL-TIME CANDIDATES!! Every single public appearance they make or fundraising letter they send is part of their '08 campaign!
Last point: has Kerry sent a single fund-raising letter since the campaign ended? No.
Has Dean sent a single letter that wasn't a pitch? You know the answer: NO.
Just thought you might like to know.

not that I ever thought badly of him. But I thought it was a protective gesture, not wanting Boxer to be marginalized as the only nay vote. Regardless of his motivation, I was raised that actions speak louder than words, and his action was impeccable. I also think that by Kerry joining in the nays, that next time somebody else might decide to go in on it. And gradually they might get bigger groups of dems voting nay - iow, I guess I am still hoping they can grow some cajones. Regarding the election,I really wish that Kerry had held out on that concession speech longer. I appreciate Gore's having done so, but there are no doubt reasons that we aren't privy to, including pressure, and threats from repubs. I understand that these tactics were effective in getting most of the senators to back down from joining Boxer in the Ohio electoral stand down. Maybe we are being too idealistic, and should look at each small gesture of resistance as our strength.

61. It's called DIPLOMACY -- don't you get it? |
|
He thought they were all adults there. He thought (and if you read his hour long floor speech before his vote I shouldn't have to repeat this) that he made it clear that he was voting for BACKBONE not for WAR! He was voting to give the authority once everything else had been exhausted. Bush took that vote as a MANDATE (see a pattern here) and ran with it. Bush is the unstable one here, the untrustworthy one here, the maniac here,... not Kerry. Kerry was very clear on his intentions with his vote.
Just as many of the dems voted to confirm Rice even though they had strong reservations (hummmm - Bidden and Dodd come to mind), they were allowing Bush to sink or float his own ship. It is "tradition" and if Kerry were looking to do the politically expedient thing, that's how he would have voted too. Did you even listen to what Kerry said during those two days of hearings? Did you hear what he said before he voted? Or were you just waiting to see what color smoke rose from the chimney (as in, how he voted)?
A man's a man who looks a man -- right between the eyes. That is what Kerry did with that vote. He looked Bush right in the eyes and said "Not this time buddy ... fool me once , shame on you ... fool me twice, shame on me ... and I won't humbly do your dirty work this time, in the name of tradition."
Stop crying in your cups for goodness sakes. Show a little back bone ... you certainly are expecting no less from Kerry. Now begin to expect that from yourself too. We are on the upside now. If we stop trying to tear each other apart, we could really make some changes happen. Rome wasn't built, nor did it fall, in one day or with one action. It took many, many actions to make both happen.

72. People have gotten around Boxer's Patriot Act vote |
|
Hopefully, if he proceeds as one of the leaders of the party, which some in the media have said is his defacto position at the moment, perhaps that vote of Kerry's will be counterbalanced by other, better things.
Like the children's health care legislation he's about to submit on Monday, for one. Can't wait to see the legislation that some of us co-sponsored, btw.
I still think it's folly to judge these folks on a vote for or against one thing. I'd hate to see Boxer's support wan immediately after she votes for something some don't like. I'm personally not getting on that rollercoaster. People like Kerry and Boxer are better than their votes for IWR or the Patriot Act.
I try to remember what was going on when these things happened. Several of us had to wake up to just how evil these people are, evil enough to play poltical games with very, very serious stuff.
On my site, I have the IWR speech that Kerry made if you'd like to read it.

65. Yes. He earned a point with me. |

I'm no fan of Kerry, as many know, but I must give credit where credit is due. He voted against that lying traitor, and that is vital.

69. Kiss my sweet Irish Massachusetts ass. |

Shut your mouths. You don't know Kerry and you just want to complain. Where the hell were you during the campaign. I was in the trenches and I still love Kerry,. He would be a president not a bobble head like bush. The man is insane and yet people voted for him. The good american people who would rather be bigots, haters of people of different ideas. I think the average american is nuts and obnoxious.

70. I voted yes. It was a good vote. Of course, legitimizing the steal |

remains too huge to be undone by one courageous act, but I always give credit where it's due.
