DailyKos: Open Letter to Terry McAuliffe
(Response to a fund-raising letter)

Dear Mr. McAuliffe,

<snip>

You said, "When President Bush tries to dismantle Social Security, the Democratic Party will be there to stop him. When he tries to make his disastrous tax cuts permanent, we'll be there to stop him. When he tries to stack the Supreme Court with right-wing judges who don't share our values, we'll be there to stop him." And just how do you propose to do that, Mr. McAuliffe? Perhaps the same way Senate Democrats stood up last week and this week to "stop him" from making disastrous cabinet appointments?

<snip>

So spare me your chest thumping. I won't be sending you any money. But let me tell you where I will be sending it: to Barbara Boxer's PAC for a Change because she showed me she would fight,

<snip>

If the DNC can meet a few conditions, I'll consider donating when they are met. (1) A competent leader who can (2) articulate how Democrats differ from Republicans rather than looking for common ground, and (3) a progressive platform whose defining plank is opposition to Bush's brand of conservatism.

1. I got that letter too
My answer--

Terry McAuliffe
Chairman, DNC
430 S. Capitol St. SE
Washington DC 20003

Dear Mr. McAuliffe,

I got your email solicitation for support today. I am hereby notifying you that any support for the national organization is contingent upon the selection of Howard Dean for the next chair. I am a supporter of universal health care, and an opponent of outsourcing and starting immoral and illegal wars of choice. I am sick and tired of doing footwork for office seekers who dismiss my concerns, who will not stand up and fight back, and especially who will not address the problems of voter suppression and the total control of unauditable voting machines by Republican-owned companies. Dr. Dean is the best bet for strengthening the grassroots party in all fifty states.

I’m not a lifelong Democrat—in fact I just switched my registration from Green last year. If Dean is not chosen, I will not be leaving the party, as I have come to the conclusion that the Greens are in no position to contest national elections seriously, but my financial support and time will be devoted toward building my local legislative district, county and state organizations. I will also be supporting the Progressive Democrats of America and Democracy for America, as well as individual candidates who support my agenda. In fact, I’ve just sent $25 to Barbara Boxer. Candidates who want my support from now on will have to use her as a role model.
