Why doesn't the media mention that Chalabi is one of the candidates
Edited on Fri Jan-21-05 02:06 PM by kentuck
for president of Iraq? I have only heard one reporter mention it - Christiane Amanpour on CNN. After all, he was their friend and confidante for several years before we invaded. Most people have no idea who is running other than there are about 1100 candidates. But, this is all just another part of their censorship of the Iraq War. Just as it is very difficult to find the horrific photos that are coming out of Iraq daily. You won't find them on the American media.

1. That's because the Bush controlled media
doesn't want to remind anyone that Chalabis' LIES were part of the
"rational" to invade Iraq in the first place.

2. I wasn't aware that they were electing a "president"
My impression is that it was some kind of counsel or something. The vagueness of the whole thing makes me believe it is all bullshit.

4. Nope, they are electing a Constitutional Convention
...to finish the Constitution that Bremer started writing for them.

Now they HAD a perfectly good constitution (as a Republic) dating back a ways, but as Naomi Klein pointed out, the neocons wanted to 'start with a clean slate'. They put all sorts of onerous privatization requirements on the Iraqi government, to allow for 'foreign investment' (ie., theft by American carpetbaggers). Basically, if it's not tied down, the Iraqi government has to privatize it.

Odd thing is, these economic laws that force the Iraqis to allow US companies to control their water, sewer, power, health care, etc... have ABSOLUTELY NO LEGAL STANDING WHATSOEVER, since they were devised by an occupying power.

Whether they end up honoring them in the end is anyone's guess, but one hint: No insurance company anywhere, not even Bremer's former one, was willing to underwrite these new privatization measures. Guess who's insuring all these bascially illegal and coerced contracts? That's right -- the American taxpayer (specifically the US Export/Import Bank). We'll be stuck with the bill AGAIN once a legitimate Iraqi government tosses all these laws out someday (and the government won't be seen as legitimate until it does).

So I'd be willing to forecast that the results from this whole election farce will be thrown out in the end, once the US is thrown out of Iraq.

3. Also don't forget
There are like 1100 candidates yes, but most of the ones who actually have a chance at winning anything haven't even revealed their names yet, out of fear of being killed.
