Democrats can win the gay marriage and abortion debates |
|
Abortion
The Republican approach to the issue of abortion hasn't worked. Being self-righteous and condescending about abortion is not an effective strategy because it does not deal with the actual reasons women have abortions. Most women have abortions because they can't afford to take care of it once it's born. The Conservatives' rigid approach of telling these women to be self-reliant and government can't do anything to make it easier has actually increased the number of abortions in this country.
Gay Marriage
Is there an evidence that forbidding gays from marrying actually helps heterosexual marriage. Does preventing gays from marrying lower the divorce rate, children being born out of wedlock, adultery, domestic violence etc? There is no evidence to conclude these things are related. Therefore gays have a right to pursue happiness just like heterosexual individuals.

1. Even better, they could change the subject to something important. |

The deficit maybe, or outsourcing, just as examples.

2. The way I see it, the abortion question has one answer |

I've said this to several anti-abortionists I know, and that is that it's not a question because outlawing them will not stop them.
You can either make them safe, clean and legal, or you can outlaw them and force women to go to hack doctors and get them coat-hanger style, which will kill them. What's it going to be? If they're truly pro-life, they can only choose to leave them as is.
