Did the neocons push M. Powell out of his job??
Edited on Sun Jan-23-05 02:28 AM by rainbow4321
I went over and visited the dark side to see what stupid things they have done/said recently and found this on a neocon website. Did the neocons tell shrub they wanted Powell gone? And if so, who do they plan on replacing him with...this could get scary..poor Spongebob's days could be numbered.

...American Family Association president Tim Wildmon says there will be no accountability on the part of broadcasters until the Federal Communications Commission stops making deals with media companies for indecency complaints. Viacom, the parent company of CBS, paid the FCC $3.5 million in exchange for the government dropping thousands of complaints for indecent broadcasts.

Recently AFA charged that Viacom was simply being allowed to pay "indecency dues" and warned that the broadcaster and companies like it would continue to air offensive programming. It happened again on December 31, when CBS ran a repeat episode of the show Without a Trace, featuring a disturbingly graphic sex scene.

AFA's president says this is what happens when the FCC cuts deals with the networks instead of doing its job. When the networks violate federal indecency regulations, Wildmon asserts, the FCC commissioners "need to fine them every time and fine them to the fullest extent of the law.

They can't be saying to the networks, 'You pay this money and you have an indecency license.' So they're going to have to hit them and hit them hard." The ministry leader is urging pro-family citizens to get involved by visiting the AFA website, where they can find information on how to file a complaint about network indecency

1. Sounds like the FCC is now in the racketeering business.

2. Here's an idea.
If these folks are so worried about what's on TV and in the movies,
DON"T WATCH IT!! Make movies and TV shows they want to see.
It's very simple, really. If they can buy networks and put
con men preachers on, they can certainly produce shows and movies that fit their viewing desires.

7. Silly liberal poppycock
Contrary opinions and tastes SIMPLY SHOULDN'T EXIST. That's the heart of conservatism. They'll use your argument to allow things you find offensive, but those that stray from their rigid rulebooks are to be destroyed, along with the people who foster them.

3. AFA considered him a miserable failure as a censor and -
the majority of all complaints during his tenure came from them but I found it hard to believe their letter writing campaigns alone could've ousted him. Maybe this explains it.

I wonder what they mean by "hit them hard" - take a station off-air?

4. Martin Seen as Leading Race to Succeed Powell
http://www.newsday.com/business/la-fi-fccfuture22jan22,0,5991420.story?coll=ny-business-leadheadlines

Before his appointment to the Federal Communications Commission, Kevin J. Martin worked for the Bush-Cheney transition team. Now the speculation is that the president may help Martin himself transition into a new job: chairman of the FCC

Everyone will be looking forward to working with a new commission because of the unproductive attitude that has enveloped this one," said Jessica Zufolo, an analyst for Medley Global Advisors. "Everyone is desperately hoping that a consensus will be found in a post-Powell era." The Powell era often was marred, she said, by acrimony, court fights and too many 3-2 votes that left even victors worried about how long the decisions would hold up.

Since his appointment to the FCC in 2001, Martin has appeared to follow a more stringent deregulatory path than Powell in certain matters, yet in others he can be more bent on using regulation to achieve results. He also is considered more hard-line on indecency issues than Powell, who has drawn fire from broadcast executives for taking them to task for sexually explicit content.

After Powell negotiated a record $3.5-million settlement with Viacom Inc. over indecency, Martin criticized the pact, saying it wasn't as tough as earlier consent decrees reached with Clear Channel Communications Inc. and Emmis Communications Corp. "By requiring less of Viacom than we have required of others, we may be treating those other companies unfairly," he said.

5. Thanks,
I almost feel sorry for him. Both sides hated him - one for being too stringent and the other for not being stringent enough! A loose loose situation no matter what he did. Meanwhile, Martin's waiting in the wings, ready to step in and please the AFA and piss off the middle and left royally. Oughta be fun.

6. It's probably punitive on their part. One more kick at Colin Powell.
"And your little kid, too."
