Adelstein Dubs Powell Tenure "Destructive"
Jan. 21, 2005
By Tony Sanders

In a conversation with liberal talker Ed Schultz only hours after Michael Powell announced his resignation as FCC chairman, commissioner Jonathan Adelstein got a chance to fire a warning shot across the bow of the White House. On air at about 3:45 p.m, Adelstein termed Powell’s legacy as the “broadest, most destructive rollback” of media ownership limits, a rollback Adelstein dubbed a “disaster” for Powell and one ultimately subjected to a “bipartisan rebuke.”

Adelstein also said the courts have put the commission’s proposed ownership deregulations “on ice,” adding that if the FCC doesn’t appeal to the Supreme Court “that means we’ll have to start from scratch.”

Schultz asked about a return of the Fairness Doctrine but was told by the commissioner there was no likelihood of its return “at least not under this administration.” Adelstein then took a chance to praise Schultz, saying, “Talk radio is completely dominated by conservatives, except for a few bright lights like yourself.”

Adelstein told Schultz that indecency fines will continue to be levied by the FCC “but we have to be careful.” He said the case of some affiliates declining to broadcast “Saving Private Ryan” might be indicative of a “chilling effect” on the industry and that the FCC needs to be careful about straying too close to affecting First Amendment rights.

1. Destructive disasters have abounded from all corners of this
Administration: Powell at the FCC was symptomatic of a much broader neocon policy, a mere microcosm of their overall destructive zeal. And the people clamor for more.
