President For Life?
Fox News getting ready to discuss Republican plans to change the Constitution so that presidents can rule for 3 terms, 4 terms, as long as they keep winning elections.

In a time of relentless outrages and insults from the Republicans, surely this is one of the worst. If they seriously push this idea, we will have to start talking about armed rebellion.

11. The Irony
I was wondering when they would get around to this.. It seems that I can remember back when President Bill Clinton was in office, all the neo-con news outlets (especially Rush Limbaugh) were raising big concerns that President Clinton would attempt to thwart the Constitution so he wouldn't have to leave office. And they (the neo-cons) made a troubling big deal about this.

Their fear mongering went so far as to say things such as: "whatever you do, do not ever give up your guns because Slick Willy may try and override the Constitution and stay in office and send his minions to come confiscate your guns."

LOL.. I am serious, I can remember them saying these sorts of things.

NOW - it would seem that since a NAZI is occupying the White House, its all well and fine if he proclaims himself Der Furor. It would seem that these neo-cons would wet dream all over themselves if this were to happen.

LOL. What kind of perverted individual must you be in order to think like a neo-con? They never cease to amaze me..

*shakes head*

P.S. Yes, yes I use to listen to Rush Limbaugh a number of years ago. And not because I enjoyed it. Oh no, no, no... I listened to his show to try understand the mentality of those who would depose me when my union (the I.L.W.U.) would have a labor dispute. Believe me, it was very hard to stomach it. I mean it almost hard to believe that there's people in this country who are absolute Nazis.

2. I Was Waiting For This One
Like I mentioned in an earlier post, we really don't even know how bad it will get. People can't blow this off & say it won't go anywhere. I will make one prediction though . . .
bu$h's worst will be the first year of his appointed second term...
Stay tuned . . .

3. Now that the elections are rigged
and/or the unwashed masses of the red states are permaently mind-controlled by fears and phobias ranging from homosexuality to terrorism, you knew this kind of "reform" was coming.

It was even briefly considered at the beginning of Reagan's second term, but I believe the political people close to him such as Deaver and Rollins were starting to realize it would be difficult enough ,with the Alzheimer's onset, for him to finish out that term 'compos mentis,' much less keep going into the '90s.

4. No chance. . .
. . . unless they suspend the Constitution. They don't have the votes in the Congress or the State Legislatures to amend the Constitution.

If they suspend the Constitution, then to the barricades!

5. Note last paragraph
Excerpt: As long as I hold this office, I promise that I will serve all Americans and will work to promote the unity of our great nation. And working together, we will secure the blessings of liberty, not only for ourselves, but for generations of Americans to come.

Text of President Bush's Radio Address to the Nation for Jan. 22

1/22/2005 12:43:00 PM

--------------------------------------------------------------------

To: National Desk

Contact: White House Press Office, 202-456-2580

WASHINGTON, Jan. 22 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following is the text of the President's radio address to the nation today:

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning.

My fellow Americans, earlier this week I had the honor of taking, for the second time, the oath of office as your President. The inaugural ceremony is simple, yet its meaning is profound. Every four years, the American people hold an inauguration to reaffirm our faith in liberty, and to celebrate the democratic institutions that preserve it. To place one's hand on the Bible and swear the oath is a humbling experience, and a reminder of the high trust and great responsibility that the presidency brings. With deep appreciation for your support, and mindful of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, I'm eager to begin the work of a new term.

In the years since I first swore to preserve, protect and defend our Constitution, our nation has been tested. Our enemies have found America more than equal to the task. In response to attacks on our home soil, we have captured or killed terrorists across the Earth. We have taken unprecedented steps to secure our homeland from future attacks, and our troops have liberated millions from oppression.

At home, thanks to pro-growth policies and the hard work of the American people, we overcame a recession and created over 2 million new jobs in the past year alone. Now we move forward. We remain in a war the United States will continue to lead -- fighting terrorists abroad, so we do not have to face them here at home. We will strive to keep the world's most dangerous weapons out of the hands of terrorists and tyrants. And our nation will stand by the peoples of Afghanistan and Iraq as they build free and democratic societies in their own lands -- because when America gives its word, America must keep its word.

As I stated in my inaugural address, our security at home increasingly depends on the success of liberty abroad. So we will continue to promote freedom, hope and democracy in the broader Middle East -- and by doing so, defeat the despair, hopelessness and resentments that feed terror.

At home, too, we will expand freedom. We will continue to bring high standards and accountability to our public schools, so that every child can learn. We will transform our retirement and health systems, reform the legal system and simplify the tax code, so that all Americans enjoy the dignity and independence that comes from ownership. In this ownership society, every citizen will have a real stake in the promise of America. And our most valued institutions will be better prepared to meet the new challenges of a new time.

This week, Washington has been marked by pomp and circumstance. In a free nation, these ceremonies are more than pageantry. They underscore that public office is a public trust. America's elected leaders derive their authority from the consent of the American people, whom we serve. This is a high privilege, and that privilege carries a serious responsibility: to confront problems now, instead of passing them on to future generations.

And working together, we will secure the blessings of liberty, not only for ourselves, but for generations of Americans to come.

Thank you for listening.

7. Actually
Actually, a lot of Dems are behind this as they believe Bill C. would be able to beat Bush or any other Repub. who may want to run after Bush's term is over. But I don't think it will happen.

8. In Favor of it?
We have to understand that politics is no picnic-they'll just keep rigging elections (like they did this time) so Bush keeps winning until he dies.

9. Bill in 2008?
I agree with your analysis. That some would like a Bill Clinton vs. The Shrub race in '08, but not enough to actually ammend the constitution in time. It'll never happen

13. Could a repub-dominated Supreme Court strike an amendment?
I know it's not the usual form, but then nothing much is usual these days. They'd never get an amendment done in time to keep the blivet** in office; perhaps they're thinking along more revolutionary lines?

Any constitutional scholars here care to comment?

12. They'd easily fix that by putting in a provision
that the law does NOT apply to presidents who previously served, so Clinton, GHW Bush, Ford, and Carter could not take advantage of it. GW Bush is of course currently occupying the White House so he would, naturally, be exempted from this provision.
