‘God-drenched’ pledges of the president split Republicans
Tony Allen-Mills

PRESIDENT George Bush’s bold inauguration vow to end tyranny around the world does not amount to a “right turn” or signal dramatic changes in US foreign policy, according to senior administration officials.

Startled by reaction to what one well-known Republican described as the president’s “God-drenched” speech, the White House has discouraged speculation that Bush is embarking on a crusade to spread democracy around the globe.

In a series of briefings, officials spoke of an acceleration of existing strategy and portrayed the speech as a “rhetorical institutionalisation” of the anti-terrorist policies the administration has been pursuing in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Bush was widely seen as attempting to emulate the former presidents Woodrow Wilson and John F Kennedy by using his inauguration to articulate sweeping American ideals.

3. "God-drenched" is a good phrase to describe Bush's --
-- manipulation of the far-right Christian nutcases.

And the phrase springs from the lips of a Republican. Hot dog.

4. there is something very wrong about a man
who gives a major speech, heard all over the world, and interpreted correctly by many all over the world, who is supposed to be a great leader, no longer accountable for his mistakes because the people said so, not realizing what the hell he is saying and conveying to the world. There is something wrong with a man whose father has to come out and splain and make execuses for the stupidity of his wittle boy, instead of that man being a man and explaining himself . There is something wrong with a man who has read the speech and practiced the speech, and re read and re practiced the speech, now trying to reverse it with double speak psychophants and over protective daddy.

The man can read and comprehend and can hear himself and he went over the top in his delusional, megalomania, believing now he has the world by the balls, because the people say so. :eyes:

6. You know, all it will take is enough moderate Republican Reps and
Senators to announce their decision to move accross the aisle and give Democrats the Congressional majorities to put a stop to this madness.

I'm waiting....

9. I think they are enough in both Houses.
Of course, like the Democrats, they get precious little political media oxygen to get their views out.

But they are an endangered species. The RNC will challenge all moderates in primaries from here out....loyalty to RW ideology is becoming the #1 value that is required from this Party today. And if they survive their primary challenges, they'll be vulnerable to defeat by Democrats.

10. You go that right
I'm wondering just how smelly things have to get before the stench overwhelms the Republicans. I'm hoping we don't have much longer to wait.

7. There are a lot of very cynical Republicans...
...who've been assuming the whole 'God thing' was a snow job to get votes. And they've been okay with that. I know this, because all the Republicans in my family are like that. Not a fundie among them, but they know that the fundie talk from Bush got Bush elected, so they sort of humor it.

However, if they start to think that Bush really means it and will conduct business (poorly) according to those beliefs, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of them fall away from supporting him.

Judging by my conversations with the Republican members of my family, they've already been having a lot of serious doubts about his competence after Iraq (which they thought was a good money-making venture, even though they didn't really believe the hype about a 'threat').

Will this matter in the end? No idea...

11. "A good money making venture"!!!?
I pity you. I couldn't live with a family that thought that it was "a good money making venture" while watching shock and awe kill thousands.

12. I'm not sure it's 'real' to them
And fortunately, it's not my whole family.

Don't forget that they were promised a quick victory with absolutely no sacrifice on their part, followed by low oil prices and new investment opportunities. Yes, some of them are Imperial citizens and loving it, but only if they don't have to give anything up in exchange.

Lately, they're not so happy about it.

14. Smirk emulate Kennedy?
Not even close. Not in this galaxy. He tried, and the result was downright comic.
