Not only did he switch to Republican, he became one of the nasty, extremely partisan ones.

What is the deal with him?

6. Some people are addicted to extremes.
My ex went from being rigidly atheist to being an openly intolerant fundamentalist Christian so suddenly that it was like he had transformed into a different person overnight. His unstable belief system was the beginning of the end, as I rightly concluded that this tendency would manifest itself in our relationship, as his feelings for me would similarly fluctute between adoration and resentment.

3. Normie was only ever for Normie.

He was nominally a Dem until he decided he wanted to run for the Senate (I think that was in '96) and the party chose somebody else instead. So, because the DFL wasn't furthering his political ambitions the way he wanted, he got pissed off and switched parties. I don't think he has been a Democrat ideologically in years, if ever. I was working in St. Paul when he was the "Democratic" mayor, and I didn't like him even then. He was always for corporate interests.

5. Perhaps he's got Whittaker Chambers syndrome
My personal epithet for former liberals who succumb to stereotypes of the entire left-wing as being anti-American or communist, and then swing dramatically to the right in order to posture themselves as reformed survivors of the movement.
