Write to Dobson about how his rant on Sponge Bob hurts children
If you go to this link and clink, "NO" when asked if he answered the question of why he is protesting the Sponge Bob Video you will be given a chance to voice your views.

The number of teen suicide is up and I personally think all these evangelical Christians insisting that gays be oppressed is a top reason. Years ago not so much mention of these things were in the face of young people growing up gay and so many did not know they were looked down upon by a segment of society until they were older and better able to handle it. Throwing these mean and hurtful opinions in their faces when they hit puberty is child abuse!

1. Why Sponge Bob?
I understand your point about protesting the Christian Right's oppression of gays, but this Sponge Bob thing is ridiculous. I don't think we should flatter them with attention about the whole thing. To scrutinize cartoons for signs of cultural "deviance" is a sign of a seriously disturbed mind, not to mention far too much time on one's hands.

3. For one, the sponge Bob video is about acceptance of all people
and another, it is a vehicle to bring their abuse of children into the spotlight. That is why I think it is a good thing to do now. He has a segment where you can write to him about it which I do not think is always there.

6. I'd generally agree BUT that rationale is
what kept JK from blasting back at the Swift-Boat Liars.
The media sets the agenda for daily discussions and it's laughable that they even reported this "story".

Reduce it to the ridiculous and blast back, IMHO.

Nobody's moaning publicly about Neil Bush's Ignite educational software company. Sheesh--talk about a character who shouldn't have any influence whatsoever on our children...

2. This is good. It really does hurt children
Because of what he said, i believe, many children will be deprived of quite a bit of their innocense. Children who Sponge Bob probably don't identify anything as gay, straight or sexual at all. It also will force them into learning about discrimination and bigotry.

Because of his statements many children are going to begin asking questions. It will force them into a world the need not have bothered with yet. It might also force parents to have to start answering questions from children they were not ready to answer. I think this is really tragic for both child and parents. So much for "focus on the family"

4. They explicitly say they find homosexuality morally offensive?
"....Dr. Dobson is concerned that these popular animated personalities are being exploited by an organization that's determined to promote the acceptance of homosexuality among our nation's youth.

We applaud the ideal of championing to children the value and dignity of every human life as well as respect for our differences. What we vehemently object to is using these beloved characters to help advance an agenda that's beyond the comprehension of 6 and 7 year-old children, not to mention morally offensive to millions of moms and dads.."

So acceptance of other is beyond the comprehension of 6 and 7 year olds? I think it's the most important thing they should learn

5. Remember, Dobson is a man who beats a dog who won't be stared down
Of course he'd go after non-existent gay issues--he's got one over on the dogs.

8. kick!
I did this and recommend others to do so, too.

It's about time Dobson was held accountable for his lies.

I don't mean just this: the whole charade.

9. Don't write to Dobson. His kind of fanatic and followers are a lost cause
Edited on Mon Jan-24-05 06:53 AM by vi5
Write to the newspapers with this kind of stuff. And make sure they know that THIS is the face of the party that controls this country. One religious nutcase with no power talking about this stuff means nothing since if a fanatic rants in the woods and nobody hears him it doesn't have an impact. What needs to be done is to directly and inextricably link this kind of ridiculous level of intolerance to where it all ends up: In the modern republican party and at the white house.

12. My local fish-wrapper carries Dobson's column. I'll write the editor.
Don't waste bandwidth writing Dobson. Write to one or more of the 675+ newspapers in which Dobson's syndicated column putatively appears. Let the editors, advertisers, and his demented followers know how we feel about his outrageous worldview.
