Pelosi Statement on Supplemental Funding Request for Iraq and Afghanistan

To: National Desk

Contact: Brendan Daly or Jennifer Crider, 202-226-7616, both of the Office of House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi

WASHINGTON, Jan. 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement on news reports late today that President Bush may as early as tomorrow request an additional $80 billion for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan this year:

"As Members of Congress, our highest responsibility is to provide for the common defense, and we have pledged to give our armed forces the support they need in these difficult and dangerous days -- both to win this war and to win the peace.

"As Congress works to ensure our troops have what they need to be safe, we owe it to them to critically examine President Bush's request and ask: What are the goals in Iraq, and how much more money will it cost to achieve them? Why hasn't the President and the Pentagon provided Members of Congress a full accounting of previous expenditures? Why, after all the effort dedicated to training Iraqi troops, aren't more Iraqi troops trained, equipped, and prepared to play a bigger security role?"

1. so
does she support it or not? Personally I would support money to the troops. I would demand to know where the money is going and where previous money went, but now that our troops are ther ehtey need proper funding.

2. When those answers aren't
forthcoming will they vote for it anyway because they are afraid of the ads that will come at them in '06 or will they stick together and turn it on anyone who votes for it anyway?

3. No...this administration can't account for previous monies
Handing this bunch a wad of money doesn't
guarantee it even goes to the right places.

5. I love this woman
For those who might be critical of Boxer approving more funding, please realize she has to: Bush & Co will beat Dems over the head with this issue, saying Dems don't want us to "win" in Iraq, Dems are soft on terror, etc., etc. etc, blah, blah, blah, like they have done effectively in the past.

Note strong attack, calling Bush incompetent in so many words. Go Barb!!

It sucks, but politics is a chess game. Dems are finally on offense. Nothing to do but cheer Boxer and the rest of the smart/gutsy ones on. The chicken Dems still hovering on the edge will see any nit-picking of Boxer by the left as one more sign that they should stay inside their little shells. (Am I cynical or what? But tactical maneuvering is essential in my opinion.)
