From dailykos:
Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. (D., Del.), a Judiciary Committee member, said yesterday that he was leaning against confirmation of Alberto R. Gonzales, President Bush's choice to be attorney general. Bush's selection of his White House counsel to be the nation's top lawman, "may very well do us more harm internationally because of its relationship with the terror memos," Biden said on ABC's This Week. "My inclination right now is to vote against him," Biden said.

1. If Biden is saying that then there has to be many more Dems |
|
saying the same thing. During Condiliar's hearing, Biden was on Hardball and said that it the President's right to pick his cabinet and he always votes for the nominations. This is a good sign.
I have been wondering this since day 1.
Why did Bu$h pick his own lawyer as Attorney General? What are they hiding?

2. But he voted for Condi? |
|
Seems a bit contradictory.
Still, I think we should encourage Joe in this.

10. Which one will he have to deal with fairly directly if they get in |
|
That might be the difference. He can afford to piss off Alberto where he couldn't afford to piss of Rice.

3. Feh. I'll believe it when I see it. |

Didn't Biden fall all over himself kissing Gonzales' ass just the other day, telling Torture Boy he's the "real deal"? I don't trust Biden as far as I can throw a Steinway. He delivers these great speeches and you think he's going to grow a pair, and then when push comes to shove he bends over for the Republicans, practically begging them to have their way with him. If he doesn't vote for Gonzales, then good for him, but you just can't count on Biden.

4. That's hardly my sentiment for Joe Biden. |
|
But, I applaud that he is voting against Gonzales. But, I don't thank god for him, particularly after openly assuring Condi of her imminent approval.

Gonzales says the Geneva Convention is "quaint." God help us all. I hope there is a prolonged and very public congressional fight.

6. You're kidding, right? |

Biden could not gotten more suck-up with Condi's last week and voted for her, fergawd's sake. He prefaced his remarks/questions to Gonzales with "I love ya, guy." He precedes his "tough" questions with enough crap to make 'em toothless. He needs less face time on the Sunday shows and a little more time looking in the mirror for what he really believes. "Inclination", riiiiight. He's good for little rants and the sound bytes and not much else. He's already positioning himself for 2008 and everything he does is calculated towards that.
I'll grant you that he can sometimes deliver a good rebuttal. But he doesn't deserve a "Thank God" until he actually DOES something more to earn it than mouth "inclinations."

He is a politician first and foremost. He is positioning himself for a run in the future. I don't know if it is just for his re-election or for 2008, but my feeling is that he is playing a game of chess. And not for our collective team either -- for himself. He knows damn well that he can have it both ways by sitting on the fence on these confirmations. Talk big talk against the candidate, but tongue-in-cheek tell them that they've got his vote. This way he can say he challenged the appointees but only confirmed them because he knew that with a Republican majority there was nothing he could do anyway... It's all so transparent that it is deridingly quite laughable.
He positioning himself for a run. He is posturing us all for a run-through if this nonsense continues...

12. We will see -- I'm still in "support the action, not the politician" node |
|
You can support the one without necessarily supporting the other, esp. for a prez run.

8. He's probably just seeing what he can get from Republicans for a yes vote. |

Do you think it will be more or less than he got for cancelling the testimony of the corroborating witnesses in the Clarence Thomas hearings?

|
I'm going to vote for you but......... I have reservations about how you misled the American people during the run-up to the war in Iraq.
How can you have questions about someone's integrity (ie. lies, misleading statements) and still vote for them?
