Dean as professional wrestler? Good or bad-- you decide |
|
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 01:08 AM by JCMach1
I just saw (on MSNBC) the footage of the Dean post-Iowa speech with Harkin and others in the background. He absolutely sounded like a professional wrestler as her stood there with his sleeves rolled up. The (bonehead??) concensus on MSNBC was that this finished Dean as a candidate.
I disagree. I think that it might just appeal to a more populist streak in the electorate (remember Ventura :( ).
I still can't believe the whole Matthew's show was spent bashing Dean when it was supposed to be about the SOTU. Stupid pukes :puke:
ON EDIT: Sometimes over here we are a news cycle behind. Forgive me if this has already been hashed out on DU.

3. People watch professional wrestlers for entertainment. |

They vote for candidates they think will have a positive impact on their lives. Somehow, 'yeeeeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh!' doesn't seem like a way to reassure anyone of Dean's positive potential, especially after over a year of Howard Dean, the Angry Man. As is so often the case, were this an isolated instance, it would be overlooked and laughed at; it might even be a positive, as it could get some good-natured coverage. But it isn't isolated. I have a video of a speech Dean gave at a Democratic convention in Sacramento almost a year ago that helped put Dean on the map; in it, Dean has a moment where he is so nutso over-the-top that the Republicans have used part of it as a fundraising tool. Media people have been warning Dean for a couple of months now that he has to change his message and mannerisms, but he was too damn arrogant to listen. Now, with any luck, it's too damn late.

4. If Dean's people could spin this whole "wrestler" perception as good... |

...congratulations, he not only will win the primaries, but also the presidency with such experience political masters.
People don't want what they perceive to be a snarling wrestler running the country at a time when we are constantly under threat of attack.

Terrorist attack or car accident or cancer, no one in the Oval Office has the capability to save your life through legislation (although I am sure that any the Dem candidates would valiantly try). Don't cast your vote as if it lowers your chances of being nuked by al Queda if you vote for a guy who was in the military. The President won't be patrolling docks or checking visas.

Any candidate would do as much in his power to secure the country and its people as soon as he were in office.
However, an average American not deeply commited to the democrats would be easily swayed by the smear job done on someone who at times (whether or not it is true) seems reckless and careless.

There is something psychologically appealing about a warrior-type during turbulent times for some people.

5. At least Dean knows the names of the states.... |

....does Dubya?
I think 'the speech' will blow over. His handlers need to keep him away from the mic at the end of long days, though.
