Poll question: Gay/Lesbian Du'ers: who is your candidate?
Edited on Wed Jan-21-04 01:38 AM by jmaier
I had an interesting conversation with my gay brother tonight as we commiserated about the SOTU. He indicated that he was changing his nominee choice following the speech. It just made me curious, how the gay/lesbian DU community feels about the candidates.

on edit: added Other!

3. Thanks
Should I say GLBT DU'ers? I'm pretty much out of my element and I need my brother to bang me around the head sometimes. My heart is in the right place, though. :-)

6. Dean is the only one to give gays equal rights in the country
Not only did he sign Civil Unions, but gay couples can also adopt in Vermont. They could do that before Civil Unions.

You might agree with what Kucinich says more, but Dean is the only one running who has truly delivered true equality on this issue.

2. Kerry and Edwards oppose gay marriage
Dean supports civil unions. Kucinich says that he supports full civil rights for GLBT including marriage.

Everyone should read Wes Clark interview in The Advocate which it is posted elsewhere in this forum.

but YOWZA! I'd adore this man if he looked like Ernest Borgnine, just based on his history and positions. But lordy, he's a hottie. President Daddy is what I call him.

7. Kerry, Clark, Dean, and Edwards all support civil unions.
All favor "letting states decide," which strikes me as a cop out, but we all know what the political reality is, so I'm willing to let it slide for now.

On GLBT issues, our candidates are unanimous on the need for equality, which is something I never thought I would have seen just a few years ago. It's a great sign!

9. Clark is the only one that will do away with "Don't ask, don't tell"!
One of Clinton's most idiotic policies.

10. True--he's got an excellent gay equality platform.
He also favors, for example, allowing partners to receive pensions and government benefits. That's certainly a big change from the past.

12. And Clark is the only one with the balls to force the Pentagon...
to buy off on his new gay rights policy. You won't see homophobic pukes like Sam Nunn and John Warner laying on a bunk in a carrier speak of the fear of sharing quarters with a homosexual.

I didn't vote though since I'm not gay.

20. Kerry also against "don't ask, don't tell"
From his website:

Lifting the Ban on Gays in the Military
John Kerry opposed the Clinton Administration’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy” He was one of a few senators to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee and call on the President to rescind the ban on gay and lesbian service members.

11. Clark...
but not necessarily because of his stand on GLBT issues, although his stand is fine. I don't think there would be much of a difference between the major candidates on GLBT issues. I am pleased, though, that Clark is going out of his way to stand up for them, like doing an Advocate cover interview.

I think Clark is the smartest, most articulate and most liberal of the major candidates. I think we're lucky to have such a choice.

13. Dean
Dean is the only candidate that I think will bring the needed intesnity to this issue. We had 8 years of a President who said the right things and we have nothing to show for it. Dean will fight for gays he did it before. Only Kerry had done anything like that among the rest. If we elect someone who only says words we will not get squat. Dean has actions to back his words.

A fair question and one that needs answering.

18. among those who are left in
Lieberman out and out voted for it. Kucinich would have voted for it and stated there was no need to change it when he ran in 96. Kerry voted against. Dean threatened to veto a DOMA for Vermont in 2000 so it wasn't passed. That leaves Edwards, Clark, and Sharpton. None were in office in 96.

21. No problem
I am so depressed at this point it isn't funny. I just hope that if Dean loses whoever wins will fight for us. If not we won't have anything to show for it.

17. No, of course not!
One does not have to be gay to recognize that gay rights is human rights. Everyone has the right to associate freely, to fall in love, and to marry. That is a right that should not be infringed by anyone.

I will point out that some religions do support gay marriage. Why should Reform rabbis be barred from performing a marriage ceremony just because Christians think that homosexuality is a choice?
