Okay am I being way too Cynical ...
to say that the Iraqi Elections were schedules between the championship games and the super bowl so that Bush could:

a) Watch the Super bowl and championship games without interuption....
b) display his glorious triumph over tyranny without any distractions
c) So that the election didn't fall in February, the cruelest month
d) because he threw a dart at a calender and that's the date he hit
e) Because he was trouble pronouncing February

1. heheh...
probably too cynical. I think they picked the date because the fools honestly thought they could get things under control by now. They were, of course, wrong - as they've been throughout this whole misadventure.

2. Greg Palast found out that it would take until then to steal everything

They had a timetable to privatize everything, and they couldn't hold election until after they were done.

6. not cynical enough
I have no idea when the Super Bowl is, but if as you say it is after the Iraq elections, Bush* can go on the pregame or halftime and crow about how wonderful it is that Iraq had elections and he deserves all the credit.

I do know that game gets a huge audience.

7. I vote for number one
Bush scheduled the "Iraqi elections" in the off week between the conference championship games and the Super bowl.
