Winning the hearts and minds of americans...at the bachelor board
Okay - I've said this before. I think all of us should go to where the everyday people are - places like message boards for shows like...yes, the bachelor.

Take a look at this thread and while you're there look at some of the other threads too. Places like this are exactly where middle america hangs out and are wonderful opportunties to debate issues. It's great to hang out here, but not sure how productive it is to only be here. I challenge everyone here to join a seemingly benign message board today.

By the way - I am "JTT"

1. True
Yep, most of the people who frequent this board are already "won". More people need to bring this stuff up in public. There was someone who started a thread here about confronting someone after class that was making homophobic comments about the professor, and how others came up to him afterwords and thanked him. People need to see that they aren't alone in "caring" about people's rights.

2. It's not just this issue either...
You wouldn't believe the political debates that take place here. You should have seen it before the elections. The lurkers, trust me, are taking it all in. Places like these are missed opportunities if we don't jump in there...come on everyone.

3. GREAT idea
It is preaching to the choir when you post something at DU, but on the "real people" boards I think some actual education and persuasion can get done. I just made my 10th post on the "Bachelorette" Board. I don't even know what the Bachelorette IS, beyond some kind of TV show. But, I'm not letting that stop me.

I'm KatieFromTexas on that board, by the way.

4. Hi Katie -
Thank you so much...the repubs there run from the ridiculous freepers to the more thoughtful, small gov't types. I had some undecideds on there actually email me to say I helped them decide to vote for Kerry - every little bit helps in the end. There were also people who still voted for Bush, but with a heavy heart. Wonder what they think now. The really interesting thing is the military folks...Anywho - I watched one episode of that show last year and got on the board to see who the bachelor ended up choosing. The first thread I saw was a Bush or Kerry thread and I never looked bac. The national discourse does indeed take place in cookie little places like this everyday. I believe the democratic party is the party that best represents everyday people like these - myself included.

Again - I'm challenging everyone on du to pick a show - any show - and join the message board. You would not believe how much these people are engaged in the issues of the day.

JTT
