Democrats now fight for underdog label

John Kerry, Howard Dean, John Edwards and other candidates competed for underdog status as they rejected the role of front-runner, a mantle that has dragged down its bearers in this unpredictable primary season.

Wesley Clark, the retired general and former NATO commander, and Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the party's vice presidential candidate in 2000, joined the re-energized fray in New Hampshire after bypassing Iowa.

"I can't tell you how great it is to come back to New Hampshire as the comeback Kerry!" he said. "I did not come here to mark the victory in Iowa last night. I came here to mark the beginning of the end of the Bush presidency."

Edwards, a first-term senator from North Carolina, admitted surprise at his second-place finish in Iowa, where he gained 32 percent of the vote. He attributed the result at least partly to his campaign vow to avoid attacking his opponents and focus on his own message.
