George Allen R-VA - - A Primer
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 05:03 PM by LibDemAlways
First term US Senator George Allen has been getting a lot of tv face time of late -- grandstanding on the Rice nomination and appearing this week on Nightline to defend the administration's Iraq policy.

There's a thread on the Virginia forum that suggests his name is being mentioned in the state as a 2008 Presidential candidate - and on the surface, at least, it's understandable. His father was an NFL coach. He's young (52) and he wins elections (Congressman, Governor, Senator). He's not too bright, but that's clearly not an issue for Republicans.

What ought to be an issue is the fact that Allen has racial skeletons in his closet, some of which he's never fully explained and one which he's never admitted in his adult, public life. In 2002 Bob Herbert wrote in the New York Times about the Confederate Flag tacked to the wall of Allen's living room and the noose in his former law office, both explained away as being inocuous. Allen claimed to be a collector of flags, and the noose merely indicated that he was a strong advocate of "law and order."

In a Richmond-Times piece the same year columnist Jeff Schapiro documented Allen's record as a public servant. As a state delegate,he opposed a Virginia Holiday for Martin Luther King. In Congress he voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1991. As Governor he decreed an annual "Confederate History and Heritage Month," praising the Confederate rebellion as a struggle for independence and referring to slaves as "settlers."

My interest in Allen's career is somewhat personal. He was a member of my high school graduating class in 1970. He isn't a native Virginian - not even close. He was born in Whittier, CA in 1952 and grew up in the Los Angeles area. By the mid 60s his family was living in Palos Verdes Estates - a well-to-do suburb bordering the ocean. The Allens lived high on a hill in a beautiful home with a great view of the city and coastline below.

At Palos Verdes High George played football and became varsity quarterback his senior year. By then his father was head coach of the LA Rams. While pro football was integrated, Palos Verdes was definitely not. The school, like the community, was almost 100% caucasion, and minorities were treated as a curiosity, at best, and a threat, at worst.

George Allen stood out not because he was a football player or his dad was an NFL coach. He stood out because even then, as a teenager in Southern California in the era of Vietnam protests and Kent State, he was a Confederate sympathizer and plotter of a twisted hate crime carried out against his own school.

His senior year Allen drove a Ford wagon festooned with Confederate flag decals. He took to describing himself as a "rebel." No one paid too much attention until one Monday morning we returned from the weekend break to find the walls of the school spraypainted with anti-white graffiti and mentioning the name of a predominantly black school our football team was schedule to play that week. Vandalism on our campus was shocking and practically unheard of. Racially tinged vandalism targeting "whitey" sparked a lot of outrage...until one of his accomplices came forward and fingered Allen as the culprit. He had vandalized his own school to stir up animosity toward black kids he had never met. Ultimately he had to issue an apology over the school PA system. Some classmates recall that he was suspended, but I don't believe he received anything more than a slap on the wrist.

Some of my classmates consider this to be ancient history and nothing more than a teenage prank. I have a harder time letting it go, particularly when I read about nooses in law offices, Confederate flags as living room decor, and a sorry voting record on Civil Rights - and everything else. The question, I guess, is what is the statue of limitations on "youthful" indiscretions? Would this be a dealbreaker for the repukes or not? Thoughts?

I understand from a member of the Virginia House of Delegates that Allen went to high school here in Virginia, too (Oakton High School in Northern Virginia) when his loser father was coach of the Washington Redskins. He used to drive through the black neighborhood next door to Oakton High knocking off their roadside mailboxes with a board with his equally obnoxious friends. What class - NOT!!

Went to the University of Virginia where he slept through most of his classes, and finished at the bottom of his UVA Law School class. In other words, he's a Bush clone in the making.

He tries to paint himself as this good-ole, Confederate-loving Southern boy, but he's just one more transient who moved into this state and adapted a misguided, ignorant, dumb-ass perception of what his thinks Southerners are, but he has no problem whatsoever cutting backroom deals with the Walt Disney Company to come in and build an amusement park where one of the biggest battles of the War Between the States was fought (in Haymarket). Complete and total fraud, and an embarrassment who should've left a long time ago.

My family's been in Virginia for twelve generations, and I can tell you for a fact, he doesn't represent US. If anything, he needs to get the hell OUT.

11. He graduated from Palos Verdes High School
in Palos Verdes, CA in June of 1970. His younger brother Greg may be the one who went to the high school in Virginia after his father became Redskins coach. Greg was just as bad as George.

15. Thanks - maybe it was his younger brother
Everything else I know is a fact, though. This idiot has no business being here, let alone holding public office. There's nothing honorable, intelligent, mature or decent about him.

2. If they think he can win
there is nothing that is a deal breaker. bush has written off things he did in his 30's as youthful indiscretions for heavens sake. This won't bother the repukes at all as most of them will agree with allen's rascist position.

The repukes in Virginia love allen.

6. Did this history of his never come up during his campaigns for public
office? I think a lot of people would have liked to have known this.

You should write a letter to the Washington Post or a Virginia paper with this information.

7. I contacted Senator Robb's campaign in 2000.
I told them everything I knew and gave them names of other classmates they could contact to corroborate this. I don't know if they ever followed up. I also wrote letters to Virginia newspapers back in 2000, but don't believe they were ever published. My brother also got involved and e-mailed a Virginia newspaper columnist who responded by calling him a liar.

It's tough to get the truth out there.

8. Unbelievable. You tried though. When he runs for re-election in 2006, I
think we need to get this information out there and it should be easier this time with the Internet, blogs, etc.

I hope a big name runs against him although I wouldn't think Warner will if he is going to run for Pres in '08

Assuming Warner is going to run for President in '08, what other Dems are out there?

13. Do you have any yearbook photo's or anything like pictures or an article
about the vandalism. That might be good to use. Maybe there is an article in archives in the town newspaper about this.

If he decides to run it would be good to have all that info handy.
Hopefully by 08 we will have a better press. It can't get any worse..and someone will be very interested in this incident.

18. Unfortunately the graffiti was painted over
the same day and never even mentioned in the school newspaper, let alone the local (conservative republican) paper. Allen's father was a big local celebrity and it would have been unthinkable to print anything negative about him or his family.

Still, my graduating class had over 350 students. The school had over 1200, and I can assure you that if he ever decides to run for higher office, this will come back to haunt him.

12. i remember him as governor here
He made us #2 in the nation for executions. He tried to sell part of my Alma Mater and use the profits to build more prisons. The Confederate History month was already mentioned, as well as his voting against Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and 1991 Civil Rights Act.

I love how he chews tobacco and wears cowboy boots, yet the closest he's ever been to being a rancher is owning a mansion on the James River :eyes:. His southern accent is as fake as Dubyas.

He would be much worse than *. He's another Jesse Helms.

And I'm the real deal. Not like "Old Smiley", as he's known by Dems here.

He's just one more two-faced, superficial, stupid carpetbagger, as far as I'm concerned.

I always thought he was one-step of evil under Santorum, but now I think he's tied, if not in the lead.

What a fucking snake. I'll vote for a goddam ham sandwich before I see that son of a bitch re-elected as senator, or even worse, as president.

21. Whittier has certainly produced some interesting characters
I've always believed in giving people another chance when they've sincerely reconsidered previous beliefs and actions, especially when they've endured unusual suffering and the wisdom of age, like George Wallace when he was paralyzed in the assassination attempt.

But honestly, I think this guy is scum. There isn't a statute of limitations on behavior that reveals the inner character of an individual, especially when that person hasn't offered any compelling evidence to suggest that he has changed.

So, the noose was merely a symbol of his strong advocation of "law and order". That's hysterical. I'll have to remember that one.

22. Yes, and while the noose has been mentioned in
the press as noted, his lame explanation that his office had a "Western Motif" has been accepted at face value. When asked about the flag, his response was "It was never flying. It was tacked to the wall."

My high school class also included convicted spy/drug dealer Daulton Lee whose story was told in the film The Falcon and The Snowman.

It says a lot that when those two are discussed by old classmates, they are generally treated with equal contempt.

23. Keep talking
Call into Franken and let him go with it. I don't think he could take it very far without the adult history of voting against civil rights issues and the Confederate heritage stuff, but with it, it sounds more like long-held beliefs and less like "youthful indiscretions."
Call into Tavis Smiley and let him go with it. Make sure Allen is marked with this.
Let Imus know the old past and the recent past. Imus always talks pretty to Allen because Allen knows country music, which he really does seem to know well. Imus, whose background he admits is pretty dark, would have to get the connection with present positions.
Just keep talking. Thanks.

It's a shame that government officials are this far above the citizens that they represent. Hopefully the truth will get out.
