Talon News - Reporters with fake names - Plame leak - Gov't propaganda
Edited on Fri Jan-28-05 09:40 PM by Pirate Smile
What the hell is going on?

"Plame leaked by fake news source?
by SusanG

Fri Jan 28th, 2005 at 17:30:14 PST

Did the White House dribble the Plame leak through its own fake mouthpiece news source?
Consider:

A fake news service employs a fake reporter who apparently was the only one "identified by the Washington Post as having knowledge of the memo's existence." What leaked CIA memo, you ask? The one in which "Wilson ... suggests his wife was instrumental in his selection for the fact-finding trip to Africa."

Let's back this pony up and look at what's come out in the past week.

Media Matters for the past couple of days has been delving into the mysterious "Talon News Service" and its mysterious, oh-so-helpful shilling reporter at White House press conferences, "Jeff Gannon."

First, from Media Matters:

Talon News, a conservative company whose Washington bureau chief and White House correspondent Jeff Gannon is well-known for asking loaded pro-Republican questions at White House press briefings, appears to be more a political organization than a media outlet.
Media Matters for America recently highlighted three Gannon articles that were little more than reprints of Republican and Bush administration releases; Media Matters has also noted Gannon's role as White House press secretary Scott McClellan's lifeline and Talon editor in chief Bobby Eberle's partisan political activities. A more in-depth look at Talon,Gannon, and Eberle casts additional doubt on Talon's claim to be a media outlet and raises questions about whether Gannon should be a credentialed member of the White House press corps.

Eberle is also,as Media Matters has previously noted, president and CEO of GOPUSA,a "conservative news, information, and design company dedicated to promoting conservative ideals." Though Eberle has claimed on the September 13,2004,edition of MSNBC's Scarborough Country that GOPUSA and Talon News are separate companies, they overlap heavily.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/1/28/203014/655

Special Treatment for Gannon?

According to sources, Jeff Gannon's real name is not, in fact, Jeff Gannon. According to the same sources, his White House press credentials list him as "Jeff Gannon" - they let him use his pseudonym -- even though married female reporters, who use their maiden name professionally, are given credentials with their married name and aren't allowed to be credentialed under their maiden names...

...not sure why this isn't clear, but the point is that he's allowed to be credentialed under his professional pseudonym even though women whose "professional pseudonyms" are their maiden names aren't.

Has the Armstrong Williams disclosure led to an even bigger hornets nest?

edit to add some Media Matters information

Eberle and Gannon both post on the right-wing online forum Free Republic, and Gannon has also hosted a radio show on Radio Free Republic. Eberle's and Gannon's posts on Free Republic suggest that the two have more in common with partisan political activists than with journalists; in some, Eberle and Gannon seem to be trying to organize political events:

--Eberle: "We're also planning to do more activities with FR as time goes along. I'm really looking forward to working with all of you!"
--Gannon (referring to a Bush press conference): "It was very difficult to keep from jumping up and cheering."
--Gannon: "Can we get a freep going at Kerry HQ? How bout some people throwing their DNC 'medals'? Jane's Fonda Kerry. John Fonda Kerry"
--Gannon (in response to a post suggesting it appeared McClellan "appreciated" a Gannon question "from the smirk he was trying to hold back"): "It's hard to say with Scott but he usually knows what he's going to get from me."
--Other Talon "staff" (it isn't clear if they get paid; the Talon News site refers to "volunteer reporters") also seem to be more Republican activists than reporters:

3. My fourth time now...Operation Mockingbird...repeat after me !
"Operation Mockingbird: CIA Media Manipulation"

http://www.prisonplanet.com/analysis_louise_01_03_03_mockingbird.html

"...Mockingbird was an immense financial undertaking with funds flowing from the CIA largely through the Congress for Cultural Freedom (CCF) founded by Tom Braden with Pat Buchanon of CNN's Crossfire.

Media corporations share members of the board of directors with a variety of other large corporations including banks, investment companies, oil companies, health care, pharmaceutical, and technology companies. Until the 1980's, media systems were generally domestically owned, regulated, and national in scope. However, pressure from the IMF, World Bank, and US government to deregulate and privatize, the media, communication, and new technology resulted in a global commercial media system dominated by a small number of super-powerful transnational media corporations (mostly US based), working to advance the cause of global markets and the CIA agenda."

As Mr. Jeff Gannon of Talon News Service reads at the podium, other readers wait their turn bundled in thick rain coats.

41. LOL
How observant! I went back to the site and found the following caption under a picture (I was going to link to the picture but when I previewed it the thing was huge, so you have to suffer and go to the site if you want to see the empty tables):

The NBRM's information table was shrouded in plastic to protect from the elements. The tables are located next to the main walkway on the Capitol lawn's west side. Hundreds of visitors make their way to the Capitol via this walkway each day.

****
"Hundreds of visitors make their way to the Capitol via this walkway each day," explains why they are set-up where they are but it doesn't look like many of them stopped.

What's NOT said is, "Look how the faithful have abandoned God('s tables)" But then I scrolled down the page and found the real reason they were there quoted on their main sign. It quotes 2 Timothy 3:16 as "All scripture....is Profitable."

I looked it up just now, the actual quote is "All scripture given by inspiration of God, and profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." I've highlighted what was removed and the meaning changes. Like everything else, they pick and choose what they use to try to maximize its propaganda value.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs), which combine low-cost, high- deductible health insurance with tax-free savings accounts to pay for health care expenses.

--- Gannon article, 8/10/04

He is touting health savings accounts (HSAs) that combine low- cost, high-deductible health insurance with tax-free savings accounts to pay for health care expenses. The president has also proposed that insurance premiums associated with HSAs be tax deductible.

--- RNC:

Association Health Plans (AHPs) to give America's working families greater access to affordable health insurance. By allowing small businesses to band together and negotiate on behalf of their employees and their families, AHPs would help small businesses and employees obtain health insurance at an affordable price, much like large employers and unions.

--- Gannon:

Bush is also promoting greater access to association health plans. He says that by allowing small businesses to band together and negotiate on behalf of their employees and their families, AHPs would help small businesses and employees obtain health insurance at an affordable price, much like large employers and unions.

It's not like the rest of the questions were particularly confrontational, but there were two outrageous softballs pitched at yesterday's news conference. One came from Jeff Gannon, who works for Talon News, an obscure news outfit tied to a group called GOP USA. The other came from the Washington Times.

I've written about Gannon before. (See my Feb. 19 column and my March 10 column.

To give you an idea of where Gannon's coming from, visit his Web site, Jeffgannon.com, which features the following "NOTE TO MY LIBERAL COLLEAGUES: Bush is here for another 4 years. Get over it!"

Interestingly enough, it's not hard to figure out where Gannon got the idea for his question.

More from Media Matters:
>love them<

Limbaugh bragged that his show inspired Talon News "reporter's" erroneous question to Bush

Nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh proclaimed that he fabricated a point surfacing in a question that Talon News White House correspondent Jeff Gannon subsequently asked of President Bush at a January 26 White House press conference. Gannon asked Bush: "ow are you going to work with people who seem to have divorced themselves from reality?" prefacing the question with the assertion that Senate Minority Leader "Harry Reid was talking about soup lines." But Reid made no reference to soup lines. As Limbaugh noted, "Uh, Harry Reid never said 'soup lines.' That's my term for the simple way to characterize the Democrats' view of America." Limbaugh said he was "flattered and honored and proud to have a point made by this program represented in the press conference and asked by a reporter."

Gannon and GOPUSA are outed. Now, what about that propaganda legislation? This is a waste of taxpayer money. Putting a shill in the 'press corps'. gwb can't articulate. His puppet masters are now front and center mouthing his 'policies'.

people are coming up with all sorts of interesting information about Talon and Gannon and his "journalistic" training.

He must have gotten the "John Poindexter Award for TIPS on psy-ops on citizens" after his crueling week of education in a gop-funded program that sounds like the diploma mills you can send away for and become a totally uninformed preacher.

...and after completing such a rigorous program, it just so happens that he's in the White House press corps and gets called on by McClellan repeatedly...

wonder what share of that 88 million of our taxpayer dollars is going to keep gopusa and talon and that shilling piece of shit fake journalist in biz?

Michelle Frey who works as a weekend anchor and reporter for central Nebraska’s ABC affiliate, KHGI-TV, in Kearney, Nebraska.

Paving the Way to Balance in the Media

Michelle is paving the way for many conservatives to enter broadcast journalism thanks to the support of the Leadership Institute’s donors. Without their generosity, the training of young conservatives would not be possible. Thanks to their continued support, the Leadership Institute continues its work to train and place conservatives in the media and increase the ranks of the at least 97 LI BJS grads who now work full time in television news at networks and local stations.

We need to check their alumni list!

The information is from 2000-updated 02. (notice they have operatives working with Jeb Bush).

President: Morton C. Blackwell
Established: In 1979 by Morton C. Blackwell
Finances: $8,230,655 budget (2000)
Employees: 54
Graduates of LI programs: Over 30,000 people (according to LI)

Leadership Institute’s Principal Issues and Activities:

The Institute’s mission is “to increase the number and effectiveness of conservative public policy leaders. We not only want to identify, recruit and place conservatives, but we want to properly equip our future leaders as well.”

The Institute recruits, trains and finds jobs for right-wing activists in the public policy field.

In 22 years, the Institute has trained over 30,000 activists.

The Institute’s F.M. Kirby National Training Center has 18 educational programs: Campaign Leadership, Candidate Development, Capitol Hill staff, Capitol Hill writing, Grassroots organizing, Internet leadership, Public Relations, Public Speaking, Student Publications, Youth Leadership, and Broadcast Journalism. LI has space to hold trainings to accommodate nearly 500 people at a time and free dormitory space is available.

LI has an intern program, an Employment Placement Service and a Broadcast Journalism Placement Service. LI has placed program graduates in positions at: National Rifle Association, Christian Coalition, American Conservative Union, and working for Florida Governor Jeb Bush.

LI alumni include: Ralph Reed, Former Executive Director of the Christian Coalition, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky), former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore, Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, Congressman David McIntosh (R-Indiana), Congressman Mark Souder (R-Indiana).

The Institute also has a “Bi-Partisan Congressional Advisory Board” of 117 members, 4 are Democrats and the rest are Republicans.

LI has organized over 200 conservative student groups on college campuses nationwide. LI specializes in countering “political correctness” on college campuses.

LI receives funding from many large conservative foundations such as the F.M. Kirby Foundation and the DeVos Foundation.

President Ronald Reagan said that the Leadership Institute is "paving the way for a new generation of conservative leadership."

Morton Blackwell’s Background:

Since 1991, Blackwell has served as Executive Director of the secretive Council for National Policy, a foundation composed of leaders of right wing public policy organizations, major donors and other noted conservative leaders.

From 1981-1984, Morton worked as the Special Assistant to President Reagan. Blackwell was a liaison to conservative groups, veteran's groups, most religious organizations, and civic and fraternal groups.

Blackwell co-authored President Reagan's Voluntary Prayer Amendment.

37. I'm not surprised but I continue amazed that nobody CARES
Nobody that's a real journalist. Nobody that studied history? I, American housewife figured it out. The American public is being conned under the best propaganda that money can buy.

One of my biggest turning points was the "Infoganda" piece that I saw on the Daily Show early last year. The false news reports given to the media by the government to push the new medicare.

Well, some people said "Hey, it's been done before".

And I said hey, if this doesn't scare the shit out of you and make you question everything you hear in the media then why have a brain at all?

I keep saying the word everyone needs to say, Propaganda. People need to say and say it proud. It's not reality-it's manipulated reality to achieve a desired outcome.

40. All a Mirage
With all these new revelations about phony "reporters" asking set-up questions, other commentators being bribed to tell things favorably for Republicans, people having to sign loyalty oaths before they can even hear Bush or Cheney speak, Republicans building huge bleachers and other barriers at the Inaugural so the people could not be heard or get close, the entire Republican Party is starting to remind me of two great old Hollywood movies. The first was "Bombshell" with Jean Harlow, where she is hounded by publicity, runs away to a resort, falls in love, gets persuaded to come back, on and on and on, and it was all a phony manipulation of her agent to keep her under control; none of it had really happened. The other is "Sunset Boulevard," the great movie with Gloria Swanson. She hides from the world, runs old movies of herself all the time, and makes believe she is still popular. Her butler also keeps up this pretense, for her own precarious mental state. Honestly, this is what Republicans remind me of now, with all their elaborate construction of a fake world, because they can't face the real one, and will not allow us to have it either. This is the secret behind their "popularity" with the media--plain old crude bribery, threat, and disguise. God, these people are creepy.

43. Well said.
The "art of illusion" is alive and well in the Republican Party. It will take generations to dismantle the propaganda machine that has managed to brainwash so many people.

45. More on Plame interview with Gannon from 3/04 "Webs Dems" site...
Edited on Sat Jan-29-05 04:13 PM by KoKo01
Sunday, March 07, 2004

Now that the list of those subpoenaed to comment on the leaking of Valerie Plame's name has been released, let's return to the topic of Jeff Gannon, White House reporter for Talon News and active member of the extremist right-wing web site freerepublic.com.

Gannon's "exclusive" interview with Joe Wilson is available here: interview and contains many attempts at baiting Wilson.

Here is the particular exchange in question, where Gannon references the secret memo:

TN: An internal government memo prepared by U.S. intelligence personnel details a meeting in early 2002 where your wife, a member of the agency for clandestine service working on Iraqi weapons issues, suggested that you could be sent to investigate the reports. Do you dispute that?

Wilson: I don't know anything about a meeting, I can only tell you about the meeting I was at where I was asked if I would prepare to go, and there was nobody at that meeting that I know. Now that fact that my wife knows that I know a lot about the uranium business and that I know a lot about Niger and that she happens to be involved in weapons of mass destruction, it should come as no surprise to anyone that we know of each others activities.

------------------------------------------------------

With all this in mind, questions surface.

1. Again, why and under what circumstances was Jeff Gannon admitted to the prestigious circle of White House correspondents?

2. Who provided Gannon with information about a secret memo regarding the Plame matter?

3. Who advised Joe Wilson to accept an interview with an extremist working for a sham of a "news service"?

Here's hoping one of the "kool kids" with proximity, a research budget and Nexis will ask some questions regarding Talon and its inexplicable seat in the WH briefing room and also ask about the sources who are providing information about secret internal documents of the White House to a seeming stooge in the briefing room.

Now that Gannon's on the subpoena list and he's lawyered up, his actions are newsworthy.

50. Ulp. This is the School of the Americas for fascist politicians in the US.
Damn but Nazis march in tight formation. Lots of psy-ops training, too.

This is why William Pitt is always counseling liberals to stick together or be picked off by mobs like this cult of money and weapons.
