Does anyone know how many delegates Kerry and Edwards won? |
|
The news media reported the voting percentages, but the name of the game is delegates, and I haven't been able to determine how many delegates Kerry and Edwards (or Dean, for that matter) were awarded in the Iowa caucuses.

Kerry got 20 Edwards got 18
Pretty decent for the second place finisher, and not clearly as big of a separation for Kerry as the media makes it out to be when they say that he overwhelmingly won Iowa.

9. That's right. Kerry 20, Edwards 18, Dean 8 (EDIT: Dean 7, actually) |

From Atrios' blog: http://www.atrios.blogspot.com/2004_01_18_atrios_archive.html#107462927206483206 Delegate Count
Lost in much of the Iowa discussion was how many delegates each candidate actually picked up. Kerry picked up 20, Edwards picked up 18, and Dean picked up 8.
Dean's still winning the delegate count, given commitments by super delegates, but those can of course change.
-Atrios 3:07 PM
EDIT: Dean actually appears to have gotten 7 delegates, not 8.

Atrios seems to have mis-typed that one. The LA Times link he points to indicates that Dean got 7.
Thanks! Peter

The caucuses selected delegates for the county (I believe) conventions who will then send delegates to the state convention, which elects the slate for the national convention.

3. I'm not sure exactly when |
|
the delegates from Iowa will actually be selected, and I'm not sure the ones coming out of the caucuses are actually pledged and must continue to support their candidates. Obviously, if any of the guys who got delegates to the next level drop out, their delegates are free to vote for whomever they wish.

These are delegates to the county convention which will in turn select delegates to district conventions which in turn select delegates to the state convention which in turn will select delegates to the national convention. At each level there is a 15% viability rule. Delegates are perfectly free to realign to any candidate of their choice EVEN IF the candidate they caucused for remains viable.
If you watched C-Span or read press accounts of precinct caucuses perhaps you noticed that certain camps brought on others by promising to be a delegate. So for example, of the two delegates Dean got in the one Dubuque precinct on Iowa, one was in fact a Kucinich supporter and will try to keep Kucinich viable rather than Dean. There are many so-called stealth delegates for the various candidates who were not viable at the precinct levels, particularly Kucinich supporters who caucused with Edwards. Indeed, there are likely more Kucinich supporters amongst the other candidates delegates than the 39 Kucinich received. Sorry to focus on Kucinich but that is where my head is at plus it illustrates how this thing works.
Here is the tally of delegates elected to county convention: Kerry 1,128 Edwards 954 Dean 540 Gephardt 318 Kucinich 39 Uncommitted 15 Clark 3 Lieberman 0 Sharpton 0
IF the delegates to national were awarded on the same proportions with the 15% rule, the delegates to national would be as follows: Kerry 20 Edwards 18 Dean 7 Gephardt 0 Kucinich 0 Uncommitted 0 Clark 0 Lieberman 0 Sharpton 0
BUT county conventions are not until March 13, district conventions April 24, and the state convention on June 13.
Obviously a lot can change between now and March 13 so don't expect the same proportions will be played out exactly. For example, some of the big three in Iowa (Kerry, Edwards, Dean) MAY no longer be in the race. Plus there are over 300 Gephardt delegates who will need to go somewhere although they can certainly go uncommitted.
The process in Iowa has just begun. Hope that helps.

5. Wasn't There Something Like 330 Delegates Up for Grabs...? |
|
I thought I heard someone trying to explain the caucus process on C-SPAN, and that there were somewhere in the order of 320-330 delegates up for grabs. I also remember someone saying that the number of delegates won was somehow proportionate to the percent of the vote. By that standard:
Kerry = 38% = 125 Edwards = 32% = 105 Dean = 18% = 59 Gephardt = 10% = 33 Everyone else = essentially zero.
Of course, these are all rough numbers. Something else to consider: it takes something like 2,700 delegates to win the nomination, so we have a LONG way to go, here...

They elected 2947 delegates to their county conventions, if my math is right. Corrections anyone?
