Fowler's endorsement by Exec Comm of the ASDC is not as big as we thought
more at http://www.mydd.com/

Update II, by Jerome: Here are 12 ASDC Executive Committee members that are reported to have endorsed Donnie Fowler:

EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS:
Mark Brewer, President, (Michigan); Paul Berendt, Vice-President, Vice-President (Washington); Raymond Buckley, Vice-President, (New Hampshire); Amy Burks, Vice-President (Alabama); L Carmichael, Ex-Officio Member (At-Large); Rickey Cole, Parliamentarian (Mississippi); Herman Farrell, Board Member (New York); Ann Fishman, Executive Director (Maryland); Chris Gates, Board Member (Colorado); Sue Hecht, Board Member (Maryland); Linda Honold, Board Member (Wisconsin); Carol Khare, Board Member (South Carolina)

Even among these 12, it could not have been a unanimous vote, as Paul Berendt publically endorsed Howard Dean 2 weeks ago, just before the State Chair election in Washington. Berendt was able to overcome Greg Rodriquez precisely because he backed Dean. I just made a few calls to Washington St., and talked with someone close to Berendt, whom told me that "yes, he's sticking to Dean".

Donnie Folwer and Mark Brewer got tight in Michigan while Fowler managed John Kerry's campaign in 2004, tight enough so that ASDC President Brewer & Fowler were able to dissiminate this public ASDC "endorsement" by the 12 executive committee members, even though it's got some holes. It might have been just a plurality of the 12 that "voted to endorse Donnie Fowler rather than Dean", as Time's Viveca A. Novak (who formally covered Clark's Presidential campaign while Donnie was around) framed the exclusive.

Update III, by Jerome: The more I look into this, the less weight it carries. The are are only 4 State Chairs among the 12 (Brewer, Berendt, Buckley, and Cole), and 1 of those is backing Dean. So really, what we have here are some regional appointments of DNC members to the ASDC's Executive Committee, of whom a majority or a plurality backed Fowler, but not all, and there's no indication that they carry much influence. This "web exclusive" story is framed as the weight of the ASDC getting behind Fowler's candidacy, and meant to move the "Fowler 1, Dean 0" meme from the netroots (we've even got a few new members in the comments 'workin it') to the newscycle. But in reality, it's more like Dean 50, Fowler 15, at this point in time.

1. I hope that is an accurate assessment.
Fowler is ok, but I'd really like Dean.

2. Fowler is probably not #2
Which means it helps fragment the non-Dean vote. That helps Dean.

How can they publish this sort of thing and expect people to keep reading?

16. He's chair
of the Colorado Democratic Party. Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb is running, so Gates is sticking with the hometown choice.

5. UPDATE
ASDC Executive Committee Recommendation for DNC Chair
by Jerome Armstrong

Rather than do another update on the first thread, here's the facts of what happened with the ASDC's executive committee's recommendation-- without Time's juice (orange, that is). There are 19 DNC members on the ASDC executive committee that were eligible to vote; of those 15 voted in the first round and 14 in the second (one of Frost's votes abstained):
1st Round 2nd Round

Dean 6 6
Fowler 5 8
Frost 3 -
Rosenberg 1 -
The recommendation goes before the ASDC State Chairs on Monday, where they will vote up or down on accepting it as a body.

6. not a great breakdown if the % ABD holds
up in the general membership. It would mean Dean can't break the 50% mark. I really hope the person who posted the "off the record" 70% figure from their local chair is correct. My fingers are still crossed.

8. Well no it's good if he can win on the first ballot.
But he will have to overcome some opposition on the second and third.

7. Ah What Fun To Watch Hyperventilating Dean Supporters.
Sad to see how badly they need to trash ANY Democrat who dares stand in Dean's way.

Even if they know NOTHING about someone.

Like Fowler, for instance.

Now comes the posts slamming Fowler based on stereotypes and zero real substantive facts.

Apparently, Dean shouldn't have to run for a political position. It should just be handed to him on a silver platter.

Who needs elections?

9. It's a Pavlovian response to the blockbuster media term "Anti-Dean"
Edited on Mon Jan-31-05 01:05 AM by ClarkUSA
and of course, the runner-up blockbuster media term "Stop-Dean" when it's just called RUNNING FOR OFFICE.

Geez.

And people wonder why I no longer care who gets the DNC Chair (except for Roemer the Scaife mole).

10. I know plenty of Fowler
I'm here in MI where he directed the debacle known as "Coordinated Campaign". What an ass he is. He couldn't hold it together in an entire state, he'd totally lose it on a national level.

BTW, if you'd like details, I will happily provide.

15. I enjoy watching the sweating of anti-Dean forces as they can't find
a credible candidate to stop Dean, and I love hearing the gnashing of teeth of anti-Dean forces as they watch their "electible" candidate screw up an election he should have won handily.

18. On MyDD now- some info on Brewer, one of Fowler's main backers
ASDC Chair Meeting
by Jerome Armstrong

The ASDC is meeting on a conference call this morning to consider the recomendation by the Executive Committee that Fowler be endorsed by the State Chairs. The Chairs will vote up or down on whether to accept the plurality recommendation. I've gotten word on the main backers of Fowler in yesterday's ASDC meeting. They were Mark Brewer (who didn't have a vote), Carol Khare, Amy Burks, Barbara Allen, Ray Buckley, and Merideth Smith.

Here are a few notes related to those individuals. Mark Brewer, is the Party Chair of Michigan, and the President of the ASDC. This past Friday, Brewer was served notice that the DNC will begin an audit of the Presidential finances that were spent during the 2004 Kerry Michigan campaign, managed by Donnie Fowler. Reportedly, Brewer refused the DNC, so this is developing amidst Brewer's push of Fowler...........
