Lieberman says he is in the race to stay
By JERRY MILLER
Union Leader Correspondent

DURHAM — Democratic Presidential hopeful Joe Lieberman said yesterday he won’t drop out of the race, even if he places below third in the New Hampshire primary.

“I’m running for President to keep America’s dream alive for the next generation,” Lieberman told his mostly student audience of about 110 during a stop yesterday at University of New Hampshire in Durham.

The crowd was small, despite the hour. Lieberman appeared just after 1:30 p.m., when the building was full of students eating lunch and socializing.

Lieberman, who has lagged in the single digits in New Hampshire polls, reminded reporters that no voter has had a chance to cast a vote for him yet.

5. Good:
Lieberman is the calm vote for reason for the Democratic Party. Too many people here bash him. I like Joe.

4. Will Lieberman indebt himself to stay in the race?
For his vision, it almost seems fair that he mortgage his future to guard the prurient tone in Washington that is, at the same time, mortgaging everyone else's.

6. More important:
Will Lieberman give up his senate seat to stay in the race?

7. He isn't up for reelection until 2006.
Edwards was up this year, but is not running for reelection. Kucinich is up for reelection as well, and is so confident in his White House bid that he is also seeking reelection to the House of Representatives.

12. Not the question.
In 1996, Bob Dole gave up his seat in the Senate to run for President, even though he was losing. While I don't like Bob, I can respect him for that.

So, will Senator Lieberman do the same? He ran for senate while running for VP, so I'm guessing not.

10. Lieberman is going to shock Kerry
Mark my words. Lieberman was the DLC choice from day one. Kerry will be taking the bullet for him.

15. I only wish you were right.
Lieberman is my guy, but I've been disappointed in his performance to this point. I'm not expecting any Lieberman NH surprise.

But I hope I'm wrong, and you're right. :)
