Consumer's Union giving up daily lobbying efforts in Texas

One of the most vocal consumer advocacy groups is giving up day-to-day lobbying at the Texas Capitol and redeploying its resources to states where its message has more resonance.

Consumers Union leaders say they want a larger, national impact. But they also say they have lost too many battles against well-armed business lobbyists, who appear to have gained an unprecedented level of influence in Austin, where Republicans control in the House, Senate and governor's office. The group's departure has rocked Austin's close-knit public interest lobbyists because Consumers Union was seen as one of the most vocal and knowledgeable.

"It's a tremendous loss for the state of Texas," said Tom "Smitty" Smith, director of Public Citizen's Austin office. "Consumers Union both at the Legislature and regulatory agencies has been the most trusted voice among all of the consumer organizations because of their enormous research capability."

But one legislator said she had not noticed any dramatic reduction in Consumers Union's activities. And even if it did scale back, consumers have their elected leaders to fight for them, said Sen. Jane Nelson, the Lewisville Republican who has headed the Health and Human Services Committee

1. Texas Democrats should do the same
Imagine for a moment how much more influence Democrats would have at the national level if 2 million Texas Democrats left the state and moved to swing states. I am in the process of trying to do this myself. I am writing this state off, and to tell you the truth, I don't know why Andrew Jackson wanted to annex it for the US anyway.
