The following people are scheduled to speak at the Seeking Peace Conference at the Maple Ridge Bruderhof, June 10-12, 2005. This page will be updated regularly between now and June.

Steven McDonald, NYPD Detective
A detective with the NYPD, Steven McDonald was questioning three youths in Central Park one hot summer day in 1986 when one of them shot him three times. He narrowly survived, but was left paralyzed from the neck down, and dependent on a ventilator. He had been married less than a year, and his wife was pregnant with their first child…Today Steven speaks about conflict resolution at high schools and middle schools in the New York area. Aside from recounting the harrowing events of that day, McDonald focuses on his long road to recovery—a remarkable journey through anguish and anger to the attitude of forgiveness he radiates today: "The only thing worse than a bullet in my spine would have been revenge."

Johann Christoph Arnold, Author
Johann Christoph Arnold is a best-selling author whose books on nonviolence, forgiving, sexuality, child rearing, and dying have sold over 350,000 copies and been translated into eighteen languages. An outspoken social critic, Arnold has also appeared as a guest on more than 200 talk shows and as a speaker at numerous colleges and high schools. A father of eight and the grandfather of thirty-two, he is very personally concerned about youth violence. Arnold brings a depth of experience from three decades of activity as a counselor of teens, couples, prison inmates, and the terminally ill. Arnold is a member of the Bruderhof, an international community movement dedicated to nonviolence.

Jacqueline Murekatete, 19, survivor of Rwandan genocide
Jacqueline grew up as the second oldest of seven children on a family farm in Rwanda . Her family were members of a Tutsi tribe. In April 1994, when she was 9, the news came over the radio that the Hutu president had been killed. Groups of Hutu men and boys wielding guns, machetes and clubs began descending upon villages, killing Tutsis.

The day they reached her village, Ms. Murekatete was visiting her grandmother Magdalene Mukasharangabo in a nearby village. Her grandmother saved her by taking her to an orphanage.
After two months, she learned from surviving cousins that her family—her mother, father, two sisters, and four brothers—had been tortured and hacked to pieces with machetes. Most of her other relatives were also killed, including her grandmother.

Jacqueline and David Gewirtzman (below) often speak with students, to describe their experiences escaping mass killings in Rwanda and Poland.

David Gewirtzman, Holocaust survivor
Mr. Gewirtzman, a 75-year-old retired pharmacist who lives in Great Neck, N.Y., on Long Island , survived the Holocaust by spending almost two years burrowed with other members of his family under a pigsty on a Polish farm. Now, he visits local schools, hoping that by telling of his experiences, he can educate students and help to prevent a killing like the Holocaust from happening again.

Archbishop Celestino Migliore, Vatican ambassador to the UN

Vatican ambassador to the UN
In October 2001, Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop Migliore, a native of Italy, as Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the United Nations in New York.

He is the founder and the original director of The Program for the Study and Practice of Nonviolent Conflict Resolution at the University of Notre Dame and is also co-founder of Pax Christi-USA. Rev. McCarthy is married and he and his wife, Mary, who holds a Ph.D. from Boston College, have thirteen children. Rev. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his life's work on behalf of peace within and among people.

Joanna Tornatore, 17, Student

Joanna Tornatore is a senior at Kingston High School in Kingston, N.Y. She has been involved in environmental clubs and activities throughout her school years. During her junior year Joanna and a fellow classmate spearheaded a project constructing a "Peace Pole" for their high school. 1. Cult alert
The Bruderhof do not hold assets or property privately but instead share everything in common. Every member of the group provides his or her time, effort, and talents as needed. All members donate their money and possessions to the community as a whole and in turn each member of the community is cared for.
