Kerry takes lead in NH, new Herald poll shows

By BREAKING NEWS/David R. Guarino and Andrew Miga
Wednesday, January 21, 2004

Sen. John F. Kerry has catapulted into a 10-point New Hampshire lead six days before the nation's first primary, bouncing out of Iowa and over longtime frontrunner Howard Dean, according to a new Boston Herald poll.
The Massachusetts senator leads Dean 31 percent to 21 percent, with a slipping Wesley K. Clark at 16 percent after skipping the Iowa caucuses.
Sen. John Edwards is in fourth place with 11 percent, followed by Sen. Joseph Lieberman with 4 percent. Rev. Al Sharpton and Rep. Dennis Kucinich continue to barely register.
Herald pollster R. Kelly Myers called it a ``dramatic turn-around for John Kerry.''

3. 31 to 21!!!
Dean is imploding! I guess Kerry was right months ago when he said that.

Was Howard all hat and no cattle and a puffed up nothing, or has he absolutely imploded faster and harder than any candidate in recent history?

8. My prediction for NH
1) Kerry 36%
2) Clark 29%
3) Edwards 19%
4) Dean 10%
5) Lieberman 5%
6) Others 1%

Alright, so its a wild guess and probably way off the mark. But hey, you never know!

21. It could happen
I agree with the order, Clark could be in 2nd but I think Edwards will be closer

:) give dean a little credit, I'd give him at least 13%

Kerry- 34%
Clark- 27%
Edwards- 22&
Dean- 13%
Lieberman- 4%
Kucinich/Sharpton- .5

9. You know how when you are driving fast, and you hit a bump,
and it just lauches your car into the air? That's the Kerry campaign right now.

BTW, the endorsements are flowing here in Montana...including a superdelegate this week...

10. Whoa! Edwards could get 3rd- very good for him
and very bad for Clark. I have never seen Edwards so high in NH 'til now.

It seems Dean's "speech" very well is sinking him.

11. The debate tomorrow will be big.
The trouble I have had with Kerry all along is that he was so lackluster in debate and in TV interviews. I think he has to do better to defeat Bush. I want to see Bush's buttons pushed, and I think Clark is the guy to do it.

Kerry and Edwards are both all right with me. I just think Clark has far better presence and the instincts to bring Bush down. Kerry and Edwards seem recorded at times.

26. it seems that way
because let's face it, we watch these guys under a microscope every day. It seems a little recorded with the "I was in Vietnam" and "Soon of a millworker" stuff, but it's really hard to come up with great, fresh one liners when you're giving many speeches a day.

16. Clarks slip?
Clarks "slip" is undetectable compared with Howards. What happened to his 30%+ lead in NH? A swing of 40%!!! That is monumental and unheard of.

Im getting a lot of enjoyment watching Dean's campaign crash and burn after all of the arrogance his supporters spewed on this board this summer.

Very satisfying.

34. Clark Has Stabilized, and He Can Survive Third in NH; Dean Can't
The ARG tracking poll shows him up one today after slipping for a week. I think (hope!) we'll be just fine.

14. Pssst: that's a great number for Edwards...
Lieberman can say that he's the one the Republicans don't want to run against as much as he wants to, but if you listen to the pundits questioning the right-wing spokespeople with this question, they absolutely refuse to even mention Edwards' name. Grassley, Warner, Simpson and a host of others have had this put to them and they all duck it.

A solid fourth won't hurt Edwards a bit; his real showdown is coming next. Should he finish any better than fourth, he's in fabulous shape.

With the incredible fluidity of the polls and the amount of time he's spent on the ground there, a better showing is very possible.

He could even WIN it; if so, he may be unstoppable.

Don't look now, but Edwards has surged from the 3-4% range to the 10-11% range in the blink of an eye.

he's got the momentum, LOOK OUT! He will be a factor

look for him to overtake Dean!

looks like the gep/lieb supporters have jumped to edwards.

28. I think Edwards and Clark will fight it out for second
Kerry's just got too much momentum. The debate will be key - and Edwards does very well in that format.

Skipping Iowa may have hurt Clark - not that he had much choice.

of any Kerry victory party. (Hope Kerry's bulls-eye suit is clean for the debate!)

I would have thought Edwards would have seen a bigger bump

30. This Clark supporter
would be happy with Clark, Kerry or Edwards as our nominee. I continue to think Clark is the most electable, and would make the best president (just my humble opinion- no offense intended) but if Clark doesn't get the nomination I will gladly work my tail off for Kerry or Edwards as well as donate as much of my hard-earned money as I can afford. I would be proud to have any of these three men as my president.
