Linda McQuaig says standing up to U.S. will gain us respect abroad

It's now clear how the Bush administration sees things: Canadian sovereignty exists only at its pleasure. If we do what Washington wants, we retain our sovereignty. If we don't, all bets are off.

This is what U.S. ambassador Paul Cellucci clarified last week in his angered response to Paul Martin's announcement that Canada won't join the U.S. missile defence scheme. Cellucci noted that Washington would simply deploy its anti-missile system over Canadian airspace anyway, and expressed puzzlement over Canada's decision to "in effect, give up its sovereignty."

No doubt the Soviets felt similar puzzlement as they rolled into Czechoslovakia in 1968. What's with these crazy Czechs? Don't they get it? All they have to do is co-operate with Moscow and they can retain their "sovereignty."

Canadian advocates of missile defence have long argued that joining the scheme is the best way to protect our sovereignty — the logic apparently being that Washington is going to intrude into our airspace anyway, so it's better if we look like that's what we wanted all along. It's only rape if you resist.

etc.

2. Not Long Ago...
...noted racist/fascist/psychotic Ann Coulter said, "They (Canada) should be grateful we allow them to exist on the same continent as we do."

This sort of burgeoning arrogance is exactly why the rest of the world needs to turn around and kick us straight in the nutsack. It doesn't require bombing; BushCo has run such a deficit--financed largely by...drumroll, please...China (yeah, that China, the same China the GOP said Clinton was selling us out to) and other foreign countries. When they stop backing our debt, the empire ENDS.

It'll hurt--but it may be the only way to stop us.

The largest peaceful border country in history...

And of course this stupid ass of a president and an administration want to screw that up with everything else he is f*cking up.

Please, please Canada hang in there until we restore our legitimate government.

7. the canadian media is full of 'america is perplexed'
etc...always equating 'america' with bush, and always pretending that the US is a single, hardnosed entity with a hardon for?...well whatever it is bush is using for cover that day....
we are all in trouble (the ballistic missile defense program that bush 'wants' canada to 'sign on' seems rather nonsensical...canada has been joined to US in the NORAD ie North America Radar Air Defense System since the fifties, and missiles/missile defense comprise the main part of norad....the neocon/corporate pig/military hardon establishment all must be doing something else that hasn't been mentioned- maybe just giving bush desperately needed legitimacy with iraq gone to hell, or setting canada up for a bigtime terrorist attack, see the Aug/03 power blackout, so that a panicked population can be used to set up a national security government(?))
who knows what the pushers are trying to pass off as real dope....you can be sure it no goddam good, that's for sure....
one thing: canada was the world's 3rd nuclear power, after US/Britain ...it could easily have deployed nukes years before france, russia or china ....canada had the world 4th largest merchant marine at end of ww2...canada built the avroe arrow years before the US had anything to match its power or flex...iow canada can and does take pretty damn good care of itself, and this is factoring in 50 years of secret treaties interference and so on with its number one friend...lol

8. I've said it before: Kick him out
Canada needs to kick Paul Cellucci out of the country. They do not need to take that kind of crap. They also should start making nice-nice with the EU.
