Oxley Delivers Social Security Speech
Edited on Tue Mar-08-05 06:34 PM by ohtransplant
Today, House Financial Services Committee Chairman Michael G. Oxley (OH)delivered the following speech on Social Security, entitled “Nothing to Fear: Owning Retirement Security,” inaugurating The Ripon Society’s “Bully Pulpit” lecture series.

<snip>

"I’m disturbed by the politics being played by those who say there’s no difference between disciplined investing and spinning the roulette wheel."

One of my favorites - The gall is unbelievable!

<snip>

"In fact, let’s contrast how comparable investments in Enron, WorldCom and the S&P 500 would have fared."

<snip>

"In my view, the greatest risk we run with Social Security is doing nothing. That guarantees a 20- to 30-percent cut in benefits for today’s younger workers. No wonder there have been polls showing young people have a greater belief in UFOs than in a Social Security check being there for them. Unless you plan to win them back by having Martians sign their benefit checks, you need to give them a reason to support the program."

This guy hits all the talking points and ends with this shot at the Boston Red Sox (Kerry?)

<snip>

"But you know, when I went to the White House to meet with the President, the Boston Red Sox were there being honored: Curt Schilling and Jason Veritek and Johnny Damon and all their teammates who made baseball so magic last fall. The ones who after 86 years ended the legendary Curse of the Bambino. Watching them, I started to feel better about getting Social Security done. Because if the Boston Red Sox can win the World Series, nothing is impossible anymore."

Check out the whole speech here.

1. someone in Oxley's district ought to write a retort to this in the paper
I don't know where he is from. Note that he gave the speech to the Ripon Society. Are they even in Ohio? Or are they some think tank or GOP funding source?

You could post this in the Ohio forum, too.

2. Good idea.
I don't know about Ripon. I think they're in the DC area.
