Who are Teri Schiavo's Parents |
|
Nobody has brought up who these people are. How have they been able to bring this all the way to the congress? Is it because they are close to Jeb B*sh? Has anyone investigated them? There are so many accusations floating around about the husband, what about her parents????

There isn't a chance for her. She can do nothing. She is COMPLETELY brain dead. She cannot make the slightest reaction to anything.

Schiavo's wishes were confirmed by her brother and friend....
How come no one is talking about quality of life issues? Why do her parents want her to continue to live in this state of existence? Is it for Terry or is it because they are unwilling to accept the loss?
Honestly, if I was the husband, I'd divorce her and let the family sort this out, they are obviously some seriously fouled up people if they get off on seeing their daughter continue to suffer like this.
Let's also analyze this on a pragmatic level and tie it into SSI. Who will pay to keep Terry alive after her aging parents die?

16. I've heard this said and I don't understand this reasoning |
|
If this were my wife i couldn't just divorce her and let her parents sort it out. I couldn't turn my back on her like that. Parents are of a diferent viewpoint. It is much harder to let go. Your kids are your blood. Marriage is of only unity to create a family environment. A spouse if much more able to work through these problems.

isn't sound, I admit. After 15 years of fighting the parents for 'control' I wouldn't have the energy to keep the fight up. If they so desperately want to torture their child like this for some bizarro reason, then let them. I'd want to move on with my life.
And if he wins, the right is going to paint him as a spouse murderer no matter what the courts say. I'd prefer to slip away in obscurity than suffer 24/7 FoxNews coverage comparing me to a serial killer or calling me a spousal terrorist. Hearing talk show hosts make crude jokes about how my current wife better watch out.

38. My cousin continued to visit his wife every day -- twice a day |
|
for ten years after something similar to this happened to her.
He later met a woman and they began to date, but he was adamant about not abandoning his wife, and he continued to visit her until the day she passed away.
It isn't always easy to divorce someone you love-- no matter what unexpected circumstances may unfold.

How should pay for Schiavo? |
|
Since I suspect you are opposed to universal healthcare, who should pay for Schiavo's rehab? What if there isn't any money between the parents and husband?
And if she is brought back to a state of barely conscious and requires a full time caretaker, who is responsible for that?
We are facing hypocrisy here since the GOP wants to cut the programs that would benefit Schiavo if she ever came back to bare existence again. Heck, even messing with Social Security Insurance would impact negatively on her.

7. Um... no. Actually, it took a few years to wind throughout the |
|
court system. Granted, Michael Schiavo took a few years to get Terri rehabilitation before it was decided she couldn't be helped. She's had rehabilitation treatment. She has a guardian ad litem who says she doesn't respond - he tried for YEARS to get her to do so. She's had care, dear. She's just gone. She's a shell. I feel bad for her parents, but she's not coming back.

It took him 8 years to give up hope that she would recover. Until that point her "living will" issues were moot.

14. It's easy to paint the husband as the bad guy. |
|
You don't know what he went through and I hope you never find out. But the parents aren't the bad guys either. They are both (husband and parents) trying to deal with a horrible family tragedy. It is none of our business and the politicians should stay out of it too. But Repukes being what they are, can't help but use this terrible private misfortune to bolster their careers and push their political agenda.

21. More salient question, Who is paying the Schindlers' lawyers? |
|
It's not Robert.
Also, why wasn't the family so interested in Terri during the years of obvious eating disorders, when she could have been helped? Oh, that's right, they were in complete denial then, as they are now about the absolute irreversability of her destroyed brain and perpetual vegetative state.
The Schindlers don't love Terri, they love the limelight. If they gave a damn about her they would not want her to endure the torture of her current condition needlessly, so they can be media celebrities and tools for cynical publican propagandists.

31. I've worked in head injury units |
|
and I can't dismiss them that way.
Families, which includes spouses as well as parents, are so devastated by the partial loss of a loved one that they will swear every twitch, blink, lip smack, or reflexive grunt is an attempt to communicate. It takes them a very long time to come to terms with the fact that their loved one is gone. Some never do, and that's generally when hospitals, doctors, or other family members petition the court to step in.
It took Michael Schiavo eight years to do this. Her parents are still not able to confront the fact that they've already outlived their daughter. They're also being manipulated by the very worst elements on the far right fringes. I vacillate between compassion and disgust for them, but I've seen where they're coming from all too often.
The only upisde to all of this idiocy is that Schiavo herself is incapable of pain or pleasure. She just IS, unthinking and unknowing.
The down side is the position that every health care worker and every dying patient will now be in. Even living wills and durable powers of attorney for healthcare may be unenforceable if some relative swoops into town and shrieks for heroics, threatening lawsuits.
Nothing good can come out of all of this inappropriate grandstanding over Schiavo's body. And a body is all that is left of her.

33. Who the Schindlers are... |
|
For those of you who don't know this, neither Terri or Michael Schiavo or any of the Schindlers is originally from Florida (I don't think the Schindlers lived here at all before Terri's condition occurred). They are from Montgomery County, PA. Her family are very rich Main Liners (area West of Philadelphia), and are GENEROUS REPUBLICAN CONTRIBUTORS. This case has been on the Philadelphia TV news, as well as all over the Republican hell they call Florida. If her parents were not who they were, the case would have never gotten this far at all. Do you think if they were Dems anyone would have cared? Of course if they were, they wouldn't be this stupid to have congress decide when life really ends. I really wonder exactly how much they gave to W's campaign. Poor Michael Schiavo, that's all I can say.

$700,000 for her care (which is certainly gone) and $300,00 to her husband for "loss of consortium." He has stated he put his share into a trust to be used for her care. Her parents have insisted that he promised to split the award with them.
Funny how money always gets found at the bottom of every family dispute.

36. The total award was about $1 million. |
|
It was put directly into a trust to care for Terri and administered by a trustee. Michael had absolutely nothing to do with it. There is about $50,000 remaining, and the cost of her care is $80,000 per year.
A PDF link was on DU last night that detailed all that went on in Terri's case over the last 14 years, and there were some interesting things burried in it. One was a statement by Terri's parents that they didn't care what Terri's wishes were, they didn't want that feeding tube removed, PERIOD!
Sorry, I didn't save the link and I don't have search rights.
