LTTE addressing Bush's Advance Directives Act... |
|
A repub friend of mine wrote this:
Buried amongst the media frenzy surrounding the Terri Schiavo case lies a contradiction in the President’s policies that deserves to see the light of day.
In 1999, Texas Governor George W. Bush signed into law the Advance Directives Act. This law provides for the ability of a hospital to end life-sustaining measures for a patient when their condition is deemed terminally irreversible without the consent of the person serving as the power of attorney, provided certain conditions are met.
This law was recently put to the test successfully in the case of Sun Hudson, a baby born with a rare and terminal disease.
While withdrawing support in the Hudson case may have been a morally correct decision, what is perplexing is the President’s recent comments regarding the Schiavo case. The President has indicated that he is supportive of federal legislation that would prolong the life of Terri Schiavo. If Schiavo, who suffers in an irreversible vegetative state dependent on a feeding tube to deliver her nutrition, were a resident of Texas she likely would not have been sustained as far as she has thus far under the provisions in the Advance Directives Act.
This blatant contradictory behavior has largely been ignored by the main stream media and the religious pundits battling to cruelly prolong Ms. Schiavo’s life.
What can explain the President’s about face? The only explanation that I can surmise is that Governor George W. Bush was more independent-minded and less beholden to the designs of the Religious Right then President George W. Bush. Many Americans voted for the Governor and ended up with the President.

1. Surprised to hear about this from a republican |

And Bush did a total 180. Only thing I didn't like about what the friend said is that Sun's case was morally correct. Also a sixty-eight year old man went through the same thing the same week as baby Sun.

Unless of course my buddies and me can't garner any votes or make any money out of it, in that case fuck them vegetables. - George W. Bush
