Appearances of Mehlman and Dean tonight on C-Span. See blog about Mehlman
Edited on Sun Apr-03-05 02:26 PM by madfloridian
Dean appeared at Vanderbilt in a very large forum there, and at Univ. of Tennessee as well. I am surprised they are just showing the early morning one at the TN Democratic HQ. I was expecting to see the Vanderbilt one. Sharpton and Coulter had been on the night before at the same symposium.

American Politics this week features the chairmen of the Republican and Democratic Parties.

Republican National Committee Chairman Ken Melhman spoke at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Thursday, March 31, 2005. The town hall meeting is part of the RNC's outreach program to minorities. Howard University College Republicans hosted this event. ~Program ID 186109.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean spoke at a fundraiser in the Nashville headquarters of the Tennessee Democratic Party on Wednesday, March 23, 2005. The event is part of his "Red, White and Blue" tour across the country to build grassroots support for the Democratic Party. ~Program ID 186043.

The DNC blog has a great post up questioning whether Mehlman was having a posed photo-op at Howard University.

1. Here is a good Bloomberg article on Dean's appearances .

SNIP.."I don't believe the Democratic Party is going to succeed ever again if we write off any region of the country,'' Dean told party supporters at a March 23 Nashville breakfast. Some 200 people paid $100 each to hear Dean's prescription for bringing his party back after Bush's 3 percentage-point re-election victory. ``You can't win if you don't show up.''

"DNC spokeswoman Laura Gross said Dean will travel within the next two weeks to Arkansas, and party officials said they expect he'll campaign in Nevada, Colorado and Georgia, all states won by Bush."

"Dean, who built a 20-point lead in opinion polls before losing last year's primaries to Kerry, has helped the DNC raise about $620,000 in Bush territory this year."

"Many activists are excited to see Dean campaigning in red states,'' said Donna Brazile, a DNC member who ran Vice President Al Gore's 2000 presidential race. ``Dean is laying a new foundation for Democrats to run, lead and become more competitive in future elections."

"He and the party both have huge opportunities in the so- called red states, because expectations are so low for both,'' said Roy Neel, a longtime Gore adviser who accompanied Dean to a March 1 party rally in Mississippi. ``There were about 1,500 people there, pretty much hanging from the rafters, and he had 'em all revved up," Neel said.

Mississippi Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Dowdy had expected 600 people for a Dean event in Jackson earlier this month; more than a 1,000 showed up. ``I take that as a sign of his potential for exciting people,'' Dowdy said.

On Edit:
Here is the Arkansas appearance this month.

2. FIVE college students showed up for Mehlman.
That's hilarious

But of the 50 people seated in the small forum hall, fewer than five, in addition to the half dozen College Republican organizers of the forum, were Howard University students, said third-year broadcast-journalism major Ray Baker, 20, a Democrat who attended the forum with a friend. “It was overwhelmingly Republican adults,” said Baker. A scan of the room confirmed the vast majority of audience members to be well beyond college age, and 14 of these seated adults were, like Werronen, white.

If Howard University students voted with their feet and chose not to hear Mehlman speak, it wasn’t for lack of trying by the College Republican sponsors of the forum, who posted 75 fliers around Howard’s campus, including inside the political-science department, and sent e-mailed invitations to five different student groups. “There were a couple of students in there,” said Adam Hunter, 21, chairman of Howard’s College Republicans, defending the attendance.

3. And from the DNC blog:
"No one was allowed in the room who didn't pre-submit a question, and there were hardly any students — their intended target — in the audience. Seems to me that Ken's a little scared of what some people might ask him, if given the chance. In fact, the one person who did make it through, tried to ask about RNC voter intimidation, and was tackled by security.

Hey, if you're not allowing real questions to be asked, don't call it a conversation. Call it what it is: another staged photo-op."

Yes, it is hilarious.

5. Sorry 6:30 and 9:30 tonight. I guess a part did not copy paste right.
I think Mehlman is first, not sure. This Howard appearance of his was mostly adult Republicans, they could not get the college students to go.

18. Will you be able to watch online?
The video should be up soon. It is well worth it. He is very funny, relaxed, and the crowd related.

Someone asked him about the yell jokingly, they laughed and talked back and forth. He couldn't resist, he said it was a rebel yell; and the audience howled.

11. I was just thinking the same thing.
See all the college students with Mehlman....NOT.

The program is running 1:25 minutes, so Dean may get a few minutes yet.

I wish they would carry the Vanderbilt symposium.
