Poll question: What are your political priorities?
Forget the issue of the day for the moment. I'm talking about what really matters.

With all the snipping going on around here lately and the lack of focus on the here and now, I thought this would be a useful poll as a reminder if nothing else.

My political priorities are:

1. Country
2. Party
3. Candidate

In that order. How about you?

1. Species, Country, Candidate, Party
I don't care for things that improve the country at a cost to humans outside the country. A little of that is ok, since humans are tribal creatures, but I try not to give in to it.

Party is convenient in that it usually groups together like-minded candidates. I'm finding such is the case less and less, so I put it at the bottom of the list.

7. CCP here, too
I find that things I think would be good for the United States are good (or at least neutral) for the rest of the world, too. Americans who are healthier, better-educated, and more secure in their lives have a better shot at being good global citizens.

It can be a tough call in that I tend to "buy American" and I realize that not everybody overseas is less deserving of my commerce. But I try to follow workers' rights issues and general corporate responsibility when I can and just try to be educated about what I do.

2. Had to go Country and then Party
Edited on Mon Apr-11-05 09:18 PM by Wickerman
While I might find one Dem unpalatable, the other choice will most always be a Republican and IF, by some weirdness that person is palatable, s/he will still vote WITH their party on the big items.

3. Country party candidate...used to be more indy
re: party, but the fundies and neocons have just gotten too scary to even risk giving them the slightest bit of encouragement or support, no matter how "moderate" or reasonable a particular repuke candidate may be (and they are getting fewer and farther between)

8. I've never voted for a Republican in my life.
Although I suppose if the candidates were an obviously deranged Democrat and a liberal Republican, I would put country before candidate or party and vote for the one who wasn't deranged.

It is the best interests of the country (as in the American people, truth, liberty, etc.) that comes first.

4. When you put country first...
... you ask everyone to be susceptible to every jingoist bit of propaganda that comes across the airwaves.

How about a different set of priorities that have little to do with party, candidate or country?

1) Truth.
2) Honest government.
3) A focus on the needs of people, rather than corporations.

All else follows....

6. Not what I meant at all.
By putting country before party I meant just the opposite. I was thinking of the best interests country in terms of truth, honesty, the American people, and our consitutional guarantees.

So I don't think we really disagree at all.

5. The reason I put party before candidate here is because
isn't that what we do every time the primary is over?

Also, as a practical matter here and now, I think we all should be making a conscious effort to do what's best for the Democratic Party as a whole. Attacking or attempting to tear down fellow Democrats while attempting to promote a particular candidate is not helpful. We should all be looking for the best in all our Democratic leaders, and encourage them to keep up the good fight.

9. I just had a disturbing thought.
I think the Republicans are more of a Party before candidate group.

That couldn't possibly be why they keep beating us.

Could it?
