MoveOn: Rally to Stop the Judicial Takeover
Edited on Fri Apr-22-05 08:39 PM by Califooyah Operative
Rally to Stop the Judicial Takeover

COALITION FOR A FAIR AND INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY
Any day now, radical Republicans are hoping to seize absolute power to appoint Supreme Court justices who favor right-wing, corporate interests over the rest of us. To do it, Vice President Cheney and Senate Republican leader Bill Frist are threatening to use what they call the "nuclear option"—a parliamentary maneuver to overturn the 200-year-old tradition that all judges have broad support in Congress.

MoveOn PAC and our partners in the Coalition for a Fair and Independent Judiciary are organizing a massive national wave of protest to stop them, culminating with emergency rallies across the country on Wednesday, April 27, at 5 PM (or earlier in a few cities).

This is an "all hands on deck" moment, and we need everyone to turn out and be counted. Please come to the rally nearest you, or, if there's no rally within 50 miles, click here post your own rally location!

2. I was going to do it, but there isn't even one going on
within 100 miles of me.

That includes Bloomington, Peoria and Champaign, almost up to CHICAGO.

3. I'm sorry, but I am still a skeptical newbie...
What is accomplished by this?

It seems to me to be an excellent chance to be videotaped and harassed.

Going to my local post office and standing there for several hours with a bunch of other people mad about attacks on the fillibuster and other issues doesn't seem like something that will wake people up.

For this to work:

The media would have to pick up the story and report it. They won't.

The local government or representatives to say, hmm, I was going to vote on party lines, but this makes me think again. That won't happen either.

The religious groups that have been conned into thinking that the fillibuster is an attack on their faith, would have to say "Wait. We're being used!" Nope.

I mean this with all sincerity, as someone who has only recently figured out how badly screwed up everything is, help me understand how this helps or what it accomplishes.

Thanks!

5. We have an obligation as a U.S. citizen to speak out
to save this country from extremists. You don't want to, don't, for right this minute this is still a free country.

6. I agree! I get tired of reading posts that seem to throw a damp

cloth on well-organized demonstrations. I don't get it. If you don't want to demonstrate--then don't. Why try to discourage others?

Makes one wonder about such "newbies" who tend to post immediately after an announcement to organize and protest.

7. Sorry. I was just asking.
I wasn't trying to discourage anybody. I was wondering if anything comes of this level of demonstration.

I'm not saying the demonstrations in NYC during the RNC were bad. They were amazing.

I was just looking for more than a group of people standing outside a post office some night saying how much this administration sucks.

I found this site, have been reading a lot of posts now, and am trying to learn where I might be able to get involved in a way that has any real potential.

Sorry for upsetting anybody, it certainly wasn't on purpose.

9. Thank you
I can imagine that some wild posts hit this site, so I am not surprised people got defensive about my question.

I've been reading more and more about what's going on. Now I'm trying to find out how I can get involved.

10. Your sincere apology
for any offense taken by others is what sets you apart from many new members who unintentionally step on toes. Humility goes a long way here - and not just for newbies!

We were all new once. I hope you find a place here in our community!
