Two-Thirds of Americans are Boycotters
Zogby has released his April polling and market research newsletter. You can find the whole thing here in PDF format. The whole thing is pretty interesting and worth a read, but the section on boycotting, as much as we avoid using that word, is particularly relevant.
http://www.zogby.com/April-ZRA.pdf Two-in-three (66%) American adults say they boycott a product or company. And the top reason for such a boycott is "political issues," the reason given by nearly half of boycotters (45%).
Treatment of workers by the boycotted company placed second as a cause, with 14% saying that was the
reason they wouldn't spend their money with a company. For another 7%, environmental or animal rights
concerns led them to withhold their business, while 6% refused to buy a product not made in America.
Racial and civil rights issues trailed at 5%, followed by sexual orientation discrimination (3%) and a
refusal to buy non-union goods (2%).
For 9%, a past experience with the company is grounds for a boycott.
Women are more likely than men to boycott, by a 68% to 63% margin. Religion had little impact on this
choice, though Catholics and Jews were slightly more likely than Protestants to do so (Catholics and Jews,
66% to 63% for Protestants). Treatment of workers resonates more strongly as a cause for boycott among
Jews (17%) and Catholics (14%) than Protestants (11%).
Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to boycott a product or company, by a 72% to 58%
margin, while two-thirds of independents (68%) say they do so.
Political issues are least likely to drive Democrats to boycott-just one-in-three (33%) chose this option,
while 63% of Republicans and 41% of independents say that politics is at the core of their boycott. For
one-in-four (24%) Democrats, meanwhile, treatment of workers is the chief reason for withholding
business-far more than the 2% of Republicans and 13% of independents who say the same.
The interactive survey of 33,317 American adults was conducted March 18 through 29, 2005, and has a
margin of error of +/-0.6 percentage points.
I'm not one to place too much stock in polls, but this certainly rates as interesting information in my opinion.
It also brings up a good opportunity to remind people that we do have additional ratings coming. You can read about it here.
