AMY F. BAILEY
Associated Press

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan AFL-CIO President Mark Gaffney said Friday that his union isn't officially endorsing one of the Democratic presidential candidates, but he personally likes U.S. Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina.

Gaffney said Edwards' blue-collar background is the closest to that of U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt, who left the race after finishing fourth in the Iowa caucuses. Gephardt's departure has left many union members looking for another candidate to back.

1. like I said all along, another working class guy
but even if they do lend their support, can they deliver the goods ?

I'm not sure it matters, Edwards can carry his own water if he needs to. He's done alright doing it so far.

3. Edwards will be number two...
Kerry number 1.

A Northener and a Southener. Edwards' southern accent will become thicker, and that's the Southern strategy.

These guys have been on Senate campaigns, so they have had their backgrounds checked, and they are clean to go.

4. This makes Edwards dangerous here. McCain won in 2000
Michigan likes their working class guys. McCain took off here because he was tough and honest. Edwards has that potential.

5. I heard Clinton talk about how he won: you get all the people in the....
....middle, and then you convince the single-issue liberals that they shouldn't be afraid of you.

This tells labor Edwards is OK. Iowa told vegans and peacenicks that Edwards is Ok.

It looks like he's putting together, piece by piece, the board the way Clinton said you should put it together.
