Kerry out to make Dems believe
Senator who built an East Coast career must show voters elsewhere he's for real

Marc Sandalow, Washington Bureau Chief Saturday, January 24, 2004

Manchester , N.H. -- Sen. John Kerry, in many respects, is the perfect California candidate.

He is a rock-solid Democrat. He's an environmental advocate, a leader on gay rights, gun control and abortion rights. He has the blessings of California Sen. Dianne Feinstein. He considers windsurfing a form of meditation, and has challenged the winds off the Golden Gate.

And yet ... As Kerry storms through New Hampshire trying to solidify his sudden status as the Democratic front-runner, there is something unmistakably East Coast about the lanky, chisel-faced senator from Massachusetts. He is a product of Yale University and New England prep schools. He is prone to speechifying platitudes, and oozes Boston Brahman. He sometimes utters words that make sense only in Washington.

1. Funny how people want to pigeonhole. Great article, though.
Kerry is the PERFECT California Democrat based on his REAL RECORD promoting progressive values for over 30 years.

3. generally favorable except these 2 parts
On Friday, Kerry was joined on the stump by seven-term South Carolina Sen. Ernest "Fritz'' Hollings, who acknowledged that fellow Southerners have questioned why is he "for that liberal from Massachusetts?''

"I've been chairman of the Narcotics Terrorism Committee,'' Kerry boasted in the course of a long response to a question about drugs, as bands of students made their way for the exits during an event at Philips Exeter Academy. More than 1,000 people filled the prep school's auditorium, forcing authorities to turn away scores of disappointed residents. An hour into the event, hundreds of seats had been vacated by students, faculty and residents who had apparently heard enough.

"Studying,'' explained one student as he left midway through the event, not looking terribly disappointed.

5. Do you really think so ?
You are about a year behind. This red herring has been kicked down the road long ago.

12. It's not being kicked

No, it wasn't kicked down the road. Kerry is dragging it.

Get this straight. The issue WILL NOT go away.

6. It's not the East coast that's the problem. It's the IWR vote.
He's going to have a lot of trouble making some of us Dems "believers" about that.

7. Give it up.
Nobody who voted against the IWR is going to win the presidency.

Every time I read this critique I'm pulled back to Nader's Green party giving the 2000 election to Bush.

And I'm old enough to recall this same garbage lead to a huge defeat in 1972 for McGovern. In fact this whole thing is so deja McGovern it truly makes me ill.

Do you really like to lose?

Is this really what you want?

9. Convince Kerry & Edwards to "give it up".
Garbage in '72? I voted for McGovern in '72. Who did you vote for?

Makes you ill? Better stock up on Pepto-Bismol because we aren't going to give it up.

8. Iowan voters said something different.
By my count, about 80% of the Iowa vote went to IWR-yes-voters. It would seem that it is not a dealbreaker.

10. So? Do you base your vote on who Texans vote for?
By your logic, we should be voting for bush.
