Disheartening conversation based on a bumper sticker. |
|
I have an assortment of religious tolerance bumper stickers and a "Proud to be a (County) Democrat" on the back of my van. A woman approached me this afternoon and said, "Well you're one of just two in this county."
I responded, "Oh no, we have 138,000 registered democrats here."
She scoffed and said, "Then why do we have so many Republicans in office."
I said, "We've got to get the message out to those registered independent and no party affiliation."
She said, "It's not enough."
I said, "You'd be surprised. Republicans are barely over 40% of registered voters in our county."
She sneered and said, "Then why the hell are so many Democrats voting for Republican candidates?"
I answered. "I don't know. I guess we'd both better get to work and find out."
She walked off.
Lady, if you want Democrats to win you have to do more than just vote for them!
Climbing down off my soap box now.
