Judge tells Army to release Abu Ghraib pictures

100 images, videos by soldier who took photos that set off scandal

NEW YORK - A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Army to release more than 100 photographs and several videos taken by an American soldier relating to prisoner abuse at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, according to court documents.

Judge Alvin Hellerstein of the U.S. District Court in Manhattan late Wednesday ordered the Defense Department to process 144 photographs by June 30. The photographs and videos, to be edited so the faces of soldiers are not shown, were provided by Sgt. Joseph Darby, whose photos set off the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal more than a year ago.

The order came in response to a Freedom of Information Act suit filed in 2003 by civil rights groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, regarding treatment of U.S.-held prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay.

ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said, “These documents reveal that the torture of detainees in U.S. custody was widespread and systemic. They underscore the need for an independent investigation into which government officials were ultimately responsible for the abuse.”

2. Are these the images viewed in private
Are these the images viewed in private screenings by congress and administration....we saw congressmen coming out of screenings looking shaken and ashen, claiming what they saw was horrific? Is this those images?

After the screenings, we never heard more about the images from congress....why not?

4. Photos weren't released, because......see GD thread

Go on, GUESS what excuse bushCo gave to the federal court for not releasing those photos and films!

Wait, you'd have to be as insane as bushCo to guess and even attempting it may permanently damage brains, so I'll just tell you...

Releasing the photos and videos of US troops torturing & raping men, women & kids in Abu Ghraib would VIOLATE THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS

5. Mind blowing....
Now, you could come up with some legitimate reasons not to release the photos. I could see it if the administration and congress just described the images, stipulated that they exist and show systemic abuse, fire some high ranking officials and move on. But THEIR OWN ATTEMPT TO COVER THIS UP IS GOING TO CAUSE RELEASE OF IMAGES THAT WILL SINK US TO EVEN LOWER DEPTHS.

Amazing.

I think we do things in Iraq to intentially foment hate, killing, chaos, and war so that we can stay there. In this sense, you have to believe Bush when he says that he's pleased with the say things are going.

(By the way, do you remember when we objected to insurgents showing images of US charred bodies on the basis of Geneva conventions, then we displayed the bodies of Husseins sons on worldwide media? I'm telling you, we are after a one time all out war here...Bolton nomination makes sense in this regard too)
