Over 110,000 and Counting
Open Thread
Website Overwhelmed

We are well over 110,000 Signatures on the Downing Street Letter. I cannot begin to thank you enough. Let's press on until we hit 250,000. I have enlisted some new allies to help us and I am confident we will reach our goal in no time.

In the coming days, I will be moving ahead on this letter and other efforts surrounding this issue. Also, keep an eye on the Sunday London Times this weekend, I hear they will continue their string of breaking news about this.

In the meantime, my website has been overwhelmed. At times, I am receiving ten emails a minute. To reduce traffic to the site, I am taking down the email box for the time being and starting this open thread, where email traffic will be redirected.

If you want to give me your two cents, feel free to do it here. Please keep it respectful, however.

6. Rawstory says it appears he may have met his goal of 250,000!
Keep them coming, folks!

The whistleblower's tipline is a wonderful idea!

30. Yes, i hope whistle-blowers DO come forward now that someone will
listen to them. I hope that part of the site is very secure, because speaking out on this administration's many scandals is very dangerous.

Just imagine how many people know damaging things about all the different crimes.

31. I hope so too
Maybe someone can explain to me, but why does Conyers need all these signatures to have an investigation? Is it to show people want this and everything?

34. Yes. He doesn't have to have them, but they give clout to what he is
doing. The White House has already stated that it doesn't have to reply to the 89 (now 94 and probably still more to come) signatories of the letter of inquiry about the Downing St Minues. They can't deny it, so they are stonewalling. Having so many signatures and visible protests shows the members of Congress and also the corporate media - both groups dependent on ratings - that a LOT of people are dead serious about this and will not settle for silence.

32. No, the wording was weird, they meant he has revised his goal
"Right now, we are going through signatures to verify the number," said Danielle Brown, Conyers' spokesperson. Brown currently puts the number of signers at an, "estimated 110,000 and growing." With Conyers' web site receiving about 5,000 unique visitors every 4 to 5 hours, the Congressman has made his revised goal 250,000 signatures.

They meant to say he has gotten about 110,000 and "SET" (not made) his revised goal AT 250,000 signatures.

"the Congressman has made his revised goal 250,000 signatures."

Conyers reaches, extends signature goal; creates tip line

The office of Representative John Conyers (D-MI) believes it has surpassed its stated goal of 100,000 signatures requesting an investigation into the Downing Street Memo, minutes of a British Prime Minister's meeting on July 23, 2002.

Conyers also hopes to attract prospective whistleblowers through a new tips line on the Democrats' House Judiciary web page. "There remain many unanswered questions regarding President Bush's lead up to the Iraq war that suggest a serious abuse of power," Conyers stated in a press release. "I am hopeful there are people who have leads and information that will bring us closer to the truth.

"Accessing my website will enable courageous civil servants and concerned citizens to contact me in order to provide relevant information in a secure and confidential manner. As we have been reminded this week by the disclosure of the identity of 'Deep Throat', a single citizen can expose widespread corruption in an Administration."

some way to detect fake tips efficiently. It's such a good idea, this tip line. And isn't it a good thing that Rep. Conyers just happens to be a power in the judiciary committee in this time of constitutional crisis?

I love it love it love it. Bring back democracy anyway we can. Everybody knows something. And sure..it can be false leads but just like the DSM in your gut you know when it's the real deal. The word is out-we are not going to take it anymore. No more silence, screw the mainstream media-we are the media.

More breaking news from the Times! Go Britain! SAVE us this time. We are so willing to overlook that whole "tea party" thing.

46. The Power of One
Again as democrats we see what can unite us. Generally the truth and the balls to speak it to power. Let us not wilt under our own self doubt. As stated before, as long as we speak the truth we can do no wrong and timing is not a factor.

Politics be damned we need to support leaders who dont play politics with the lives of our troops 100%. The ones that do can rot in hell both Dem and Republican. Daschle are you listening?

50. Conyers on npr this morning-
Conyers-"Good morning!,,,(Question-"We've spent a lot of time talking about the Downing Street Memo and the revelation of that crucial phrase about the intelligence being fixed to shape a reason to go to war in Iraq.Tell me what your reaction is to what's happening out there now in the American public, the reaction to this memo and the feeling on the part of many that the administration lied to the American people.")

Well, there's an unusual thing happening in two respects. One,is that, excluding you and a few others, there's a great reluctance on the media to want to inquire to inquire into a matter as serious as this.

This abuse can be a constitutional one that could have grave ramifications. But,among the American people, and our polls show it,nationally and in my state of Michigan, most people would like us to resolve this war as quickly as possible and get the folks out,our folks out.

And this question revealing that there may have been secret plans for a war while the president and his cabinet were assuring us that they were looking for every other means to get into war, rather, than to get out of war,is pretty serious if it's accurate and there's no desire to want to go there, and I think it's very important.

It reminds me of the Vietnam episode of how citizen power finally forced our government to leave Vietnam.Reminds me of how things built up around the impeachment of President Nixon which was considered out of the question in view of the fact that he had been reelected by a far more substantial margin than one state.

And so what we're trying to figure out is why is there is such a lack of opposition among those who feel that this should go further. And on the other side of it ,Dianne, is the very serious problem of a president who refuses to honestly communicate with not just one member of Congress;a lot of us have sent letters to get people in the White House to respond.

And then we have in addition 89 members of Congress, and you get these reactions-"Uh,this is old stuff."Well it isn't old stuff,we never had a declassified British intelligence memo before the the Sunday London Times released it.

We knew that former Secretary of Treasury O'Neil and security officers and weapons inspectors have all said that there was a war being planned much earlier than the president received Congressional support for increased military action. But it's slow coming and I think it tells us a not very happy part of our political process in here in this country.

(Question-"Have you and your colleagues asked the White House for information specifically about this Downing Street Memo and have you received specific answers?")

Yes we have asked for a meeting and a response and we've been brushed off,we don't have anything yet.

(Question-"How serious do you believe this information to be?")

Well the first thing is that by them not responding to it and dismissing it gives it ,to me, a credibility that nobody can give it but president Bush and the White House itself. And so I think the fact that there may have been and likely was,as many have written before but we couldn't do this with O'Neil or weapons inspectors or security people in the United States.

Here was declassified notes with the prime minister who is here in Washington today to meet with the president and both of them are together and you would think that somebody would say "Well let's just tell them what happened."

That's all we're looking for.And I can't put the fullest weight on this matter until I finnd out what it is they tell me."

Host-"Congressman John Conyers,Democrat of Michigan, thank you so much for joining us sir and good luck to you."

Conyers-"And thank you so much for dealing with this difficult subject."

Host-"Thank you so much,Martin Walker,last word,quickly."

Walker-"Congressman Conyers on his website has got a ,the chance to sign up to a petition saying you want to join him in this concern,so far the last count, over 90,000 signatures. That's the kind of pressure that might be needed now."(end)
