George McGovern tells Fox "War in Iraq is worse than anything Nixon did"

June 4th, 2005 1:55 am
New 'Deep Throat' needed for Iraq, says Nixon rival

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US media needs a modern-day "Deep Throat" within the administration of President George W. Bush to reveal how America was "misled" on Iraq, former presidential contender George McGovern said. "We need someone like that who is highly placed to tell us what's really going on. We know that we were misled on Iraq," McGovern told Fox News Radio.

"I wish there were somebody of the Deep Throat time in this administration who are aware of what's going on," McGovern told Fox News Radio.

"This war in Iraq, in my opinion is worse than anything Nixon did. I think Nixon deserved to be expelled from office in view of the cover-up that he carried on and the laws that he violated.

"But we have an administration in power now that led us to a war that is internationally illegal; it's a war that we are fighting with a country that has no threat to us that has nothing to do with the 9-11 attacks. McGovern said Nixon was undoubtedly "tricky," but said of Bush: "This man claims to be Christian, following the will of God, and then he misleads the whole nation on a totally fraudulent enterprise in Iraq that we should have never been attached to."

1. It's true. Although it has been said before
it bears repeating that Nixon's ghost must be happy as hell now to know that finally there is a president (actually a pResident) who is worse than old Tricky Dick ever thought about being.

2. Just in case a potential "Deep Throat"
is reading DU in the middle of the night, Mark Felt managed to live a healthy, long life in spite of blowing the whistle. Mark was a true patriot. You can be too. You should speak up now. After all, what do you have to lose? If you don't speak out now, the world may never know the truth. Are you just procrastinating? You could be run over by a car tomorrow, and if you haven't told the truth by then, it might never be known. Are you afraid? The next president will not be Bush and will not be a Republican and will pardon you. You have nothing to lose.

7. What with the Bush crimes being exponetially.........
more serious than the Nixon crimes, I suspect that there must also be an exponentially higher number of possible "Deep Throats"; all sitting and churning and not sleeping well.

This gives me some hope.

3. Agreed.
Nixon never caused mass destruction like this. In fact he wasn't too bad on foreign policy. Or economic policy, come to think of it.
He was simply corrupt, and to me that seems like less of a big deal every day. Bush is bolder, crueller, brasher, and infinitely more dangerous. His threat lies not just in what he has done, but in what he will do. He sets a terrible precedent for a nation's future. The evil of Nixon's corruption was limited to a few men. Evil like Bush's could destroy a whole world.

There's a nice happy thought for the day.

8. And Nixon resigned as well
I can't see George W. Bush resign. He has to be dragged away only to be succeeded by Cheney who is already in charge right now.

9. Not so sure about that
Nixon never caused mass destruction like this. In fact he wasn't too bad on foreign policy.

Three million Indochinese were killed during our little adventure over there. I don't know exactly how many can be laid on RN and Kissinger, but Iraq hasn't come anywhere close to it. Yet.

That one tiny quibble aside I agree with you completely.

6. Yes, a real war hero pilot speaks out...
George McGovern was a B-24 pilot in Europe during World War 2, and participated in, among others, the Ploesti Raids. This man is probably the most decent man to be nominated by either party in the last century, and I include Jimmy Carter in that statement; Carter is and was a good man, but McGovern is a national treasure.

The sheer evil of the Iraq War and the way we were led into it astonishes me to this day; why anyone can't feel the shame for this blatant criminal conquest is beyond me.

10. McGovern was being interviewed the other day and he said
"he'd rather have Nixon in the WH anyday as opposed to who is there now." Gotta love him!

peace.

11. I have been fortunate to meet Senator McGovern
many times in the last 8 years. He is remarkable and just a decent person. Americans never learn. Rather a crook than a real god fearing man with brains. I voted for McGovern and I am proud that I did. Being from Massachusetts I also vote for another McGovern, Jim. Bush is going to be sorry he gave into the right wing. They will never be satisfied. He laughs at them. His base with a smirk.

12. George McGovern
George McGovern was my first "political crush". I met him when I was but a kid at a very small campaign event. I got teary eyed when, watching a video about Bobby Kennedy (my second political crush), I saw him wipe a tear away as he remembered the last time he'd seen RFK alive and I cried full out the Sunday morning I learned that he'd endorsed Wes Clark (my fourth political crush) in the primaries because I was so moved and so happy.

I gained even more respect for him when I read of his brave and lonely stance on intervening in Cambodia in Samantha Power's book "A Problem from Hell". He truly is a good man and I love him. Glad to hear him speaking out...again.
