Will the Democrats Ever Take Advantage of the Kindness of Their Enemies?
Weekend Edition
June 4 / 5, 2005

40 Interns and a Mule
Will the Democrats Ever Take Advantage of the Kindness of Their Enemies
By SAUL LANDAU

Will the Democrats ever take off their gloves and fight appropriately against the truly dangerous gang of ultra right wingers who have taken over the executive and legislative branches of government and threaten to dominate the judiciary?

As the extreme right wingers show their true character in repeated sex and addiction scandals, the Democrats ignore choice opportunities for counterpunching. Indeed, the now routine news stories about major reactionary spokespeople engaging in scandalous behavior offers liberals a chance to show the public the true nature of those who have taken over the U.S. government.

Last year, Rush Limbaugh, the most pompous and pretentious of the AM radio bombasts, got caught with lots of Oxycontin (rural heroin), a very illegal drug to possess without prescription. Evidence also indicated that he also engaged in dealing the illicit substances that he ingested. He admitted to a heavy addiction, but the Democrats, objects of his daily sarcasm and acid, let this scandal slip by.

Even more tempting for those with even a drop of pluck was the revelation that the White House had issued instant press credentials to Jeff Gannon, aka James Guckert. For two years, this ultra right "reporter" for Republican Party Web sites (owned by a Texas Republican) got called on regularly by White House press secretary Scott McClellan and by Bush himself. Gannon, predictably, asked loaded, pro-Administration questions. He also directed disinformation campaigns on various controversial issues for his Republican bosses.

2. Yes, something very weird is going on
You see Republicans (and I'm not talking about talking heads) go after Dems for drugs, sex, and other scandals but never Dems going after Rethugs. It seems to be perfectly acceptable for them to go after us on values type things, but Dems going after repugs is some how gutter politics or politics of personal attack. They run the most vicious attack ads by far and then everyone says "well everyone is running attack ads" I have to blame the media just as much as democratic politicians.

3. Republican drugs and sex scandals, while entertaining
are small potatoes.

Who really cares what kind of drugs Rush does when Bush lied us into an illegal war and is using it to loot the Treasury, when he's killing the middle class and the environment destroying America as we know it?

I don't care about the Republicans' sexual proclivities. I care about my childrens' future. I care about the destruction of the Constitution. I care about the rise of an amoral elite that cannot be touched by any rule of law.

4. A noble rant. It needs to be repeated daily
that being said, this Mayor of Spokane thing, is just psrfect. The kind of thing Howard Dean should be opining on it, hopefully. He has used my favorite word "Pharisees"; a powerful label, if we can apply it .
