"Don't worry, it's in the bag."
Edited on Sat Jun-04-05 08:51 PM by brentspeak
I have received some responses such as this when expressing my concern over Democratic prospects to retain NJ's federal Senate seats.

And I have to say: That attitude will surely sink us. There are no guarantees in politics, especially these days. How many times were we told by Kerry people that "it was in the bag"? And who knows how many people believed it, and took themselves out of the political process?

My friends, the balance in the Senate will almost certainly be 55-35 or even worse in 2006 if we simply dream sweet dreams of victory. We might as well pencil-in Laura Bush for the Oval Office in 2008 with such a disasterous attitude.

It's my wish that DU members consider "Don't worry, it's in the bag" messages on these boards to be as unwelcome as messages asking us to support Bush's policies.

1. brentspeak, I think nothin's in the bag.
In a great poem by Billy Collins, a boy is out hunting in the woods, catches a fox, puts the fox in a sack, slings it over his shoulder, and turns toward home.

When he arrives the sack is empty. The fox tore a hole thru the sack and escaped back into the woods.

No fox.

I think Forresster (sp?) is a monstrous, far-right kook on one hand and a shrewd, clever, well-financed Republican on the other.

Corzine may yet beat him, but I think both sides are going to have to hustle their hineys off.

Do what you can there in New Jersey.
